There’s a sonic identity in music that doesn’t belong to any instrument, not really. It belongs to something breaking. A circuit at its limit. Electricity turned on itself. It’s the sound of the beautiful mistake — and it was born in a Nashville recording studio during a soft, piano-led country ballad about heartbreak.

Nobody planned for it. Nobody asked for it. One man absolutely hated it when he heard it. But a lot of people loved it.

Which is why it changed everything.

Grady Martin was arguably one of the top session guitarists in Nashville — maybe in the world at that particular moment. His hands are on more classic recordings than most people have names for. He played on Marty Robbins’ “El Paso.” He was the secret weapon on Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” If you loved country music in the 1950s and early ‘60s, you loved Grady Martin whether you knew you did or not. He was everywhere and invisible, the way the best session men always are.

On the day in question, he was playing six-string bass — a Danelectro, strapped low and run through the console. The song was Marty Robbins’ “Don’t Worry.” A heartbreak song. Simple. Clean. The kind of record that made country radio feel like a back porch conversation.

Then something went wrong.

The Quonset Hut studio had recently received a new custom-built console outfitted with Langevin 116 tube amplifiers. The Langevin company had moved to California and farmed out a batch of output transformers to another manufacturer. At least 35 of these transformers ended up in the console at Bradley Studios — and they started to go bad. One of them, on the channel Grady Martin was plugged into, developed what engineers suspected was an open primary winding. With roughly 250 volts DC running through that winding, a tiny arc developed — and that arc caused a peculiar, unprecedented sound.

Martin’s six-string bass, in the bridge section of “Don’t Worry,” sounded like it had been dragged through a hornet’s nest. Ragged, buzzing, furious. Like a saxophone played by something with teeth.

Grady Martin did not like it.

What the engineer heard

Glenn Snoddy was behind the glass. He heard it too. The distorted sound initially troubled him, and he requested a redo. Standard procedure. You fix the problem and you keep going.

But Marty Robbins, producer Don Law, and the other musicians in the room stopped him. Wait. Something about what they’d just heard — that broken, snarling intrusion in the middle of an otherwise gentle country ballad — was not nothing. It was something no one had ever heard on a record before. Something that shouldn’t work but did.

They kept it.

“Don’t Worry” was released in February 1961. It reached number one on the country chart and stayed there for ten weeks. It crossed over to the pop chart and peaked at number three on the Hot 100. For most country songs of that era, that’s that. A hit song. Sweet.

Except for what happened at the 1:25 mark.

A noise that cannot be unheard.

Once “Don’t Worry” was on the radio, the questions started coming. What is that sound? How do we get it?

Snoddy tried to duplicate it in the studio and couldn’t. The transformer was the transformer — a defect, a fluke, not a reliable piece of equipment anyone could bottle and sell. But the demand was real. Musicians heard that sound and wanted it. Needed it. Something about it reached into the chest and pulled.

Grady Martin continued using the same malfunctioning preamplifier and recorded an instrumental called “The Fuzz” in 1961 under his own name, leaning directly into the accident. That track reached the ears of The Ventures, who came looking for a way to reproduce it.

Snoddy understood what they wanted. He just had to figure out how to build it.

From Tube to Transistor

The broken transformer was a tube circuit misbehaving. Snoddy’s challenge was to make that misbehavior intentional — controllable — and available to anyone who wanted it on any stage or in any studio.

He teamed up with fellow WSM radio engineer Revis Virgil Hobbs and built a standalone device entirely based around three 1N270 germanium transistors — designed to intentionally recreate the fuzzy effect. The result was a pedal that let you go from a clean to a distorted sound simply by pressing a button with your foot.

The fuzz box.

They sold the circuit to Gibson, who introduced it in 1962 as the Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone — the first commercially available fuzz pedal. It was powered by two 1.5-volt batteries, and it was originally marketed as a way to make your guitar sound like a brass instrument.

A brass instrument. That’s how they sold it. That instinct was correct — there’s something horn-like about that clipped, saturated buzz — but nobody could have predicted what the thing was actually going to become.

The Pedal That Waited

For its first few years, the Maestro sat on the shelf. Gibson reportedly sold a grand total of three units over the course of two years. The company nearly let the whole experiment die.

Then 1965 happened.

Keith Richards picked up his Maestro FZ-1 and played the opening riff of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Gibson sold 40,000 pedals in the wake of that song’s success.

One riff. One number. And the entire history of rock guitar changed shape overnight.

What happened next is what you already know, or think you know. The Fuzz Face. The Tone Bender. Jimi Hendrix running one into a wall of Marshalls and rewriting what the electric guitar was capable of. The Big Muff Pi arriving in the late ‘60s and eventually becoming the sound of a generation of alternative and grunge records. Every overdriven amp, every blown speaker treated as a feature, every piece of “distortion” in the signal chain across sixty years of popular music — all of it traces a bloodline back to a single bad transformer in a Nashville ballad session.

What They Were Actually Making

Here’s what I keep thinking back to..

“Don’t Worry” is a country song. A country song — Nashville, 1960, steel guitar and piano and a silk-throated Marty Robbins telling a woman everything is going to be fine. It is about as far from rock and roll mythology as a record can get. And yet it is the ground zero of one of the defining sonic signatures of rock and roll.

The fuzz tone came out of the most professional, controlled, polished recording environment in country music — the Quonset Hut, Bradley Studios, Nashville — because a transformer failed at the wrong moment.

Or the right moment. Depending on how you see it.

Grady Martin hated the sound so much. Glenn Snoddy was annoyed by it. The engineer asked for a redo. And the greatest sonic accident in popular music history almost got fixed before anyone could hear it.

But this was also a time when music makers were more risky in their choices — which is what ended up making them pioneers down the line.

That’s the thing about accidents that become genius. They are almost always one decision away from the trash can. Robbins said keep it. Don Law agreed. Snoddy stepped back from the board.

And the rest of us got the sound of distortion.

Metalheads, thank Country music. Yeah, I’m talking to you.

The Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone was introduced by Gibson in 1962. Glenn Snoddy died in 2018 at the age of 96. Grady Martin passed in 2001. His hands are on hundreds of Nashville recordings — but the one that lit the fuse was a broken bass channel on a heartbreak song that almost got re-recorded clean.

The Scene of the Crime

March 8, 1966. WSM-TV, Nashville. Six o’clock in the morning. Ralph Emery’s Opry Almanac — a local morning show styled after the Today Show, the kind of wholesome, low-stakes television where you’d expect coffee, weather, a song or two, and a polite goodbye before you headed off to work. That was the idea, anyway.

The guests that morning were Charlie Louvin and Roger Miller.

One of them had been awake for approximately a week.

Who Were Roger’s victims?

Pretty much anyone in his path.

Ralph Emery was the anchor of Nashville’s broadcasting universe. He’d been running the all-night shift on WSM radio since 1957 — a 50,000-watt clear-channel signal that reached forty states, and his open-door policy meant that every serious country music figure in America had sat across from him at some point in the dark between midnight and five. Tex Ritter was one of Ralph’s frequen late night visitors. It’s often noted that he would show up to visit Ralph late and fall asleep while he was at the station and Ralph would have to wake him up before he’d start snoring over the air. Ralph was competent, polished, genial in the way of a man who has learned to manage certain chaotic situations with a smile. He would need every bit of that skill on this particular morning.

Charlie Louvin was in grief and in grace simultaneously. Ira — his brother, his partner, the high harmony that defined the Louvin Brothers sound for a decade — had been killed in a car crash less than a year before. June 20, 1965. Charlie was out here alone now, carrying the name, carrying the Louvin Brothers’ catalog, carrying whatever he could carry. He was a professional in the deepest sense of the word. He would do his best to be the best he could be for the show.

Roger Miller was one of the most famous men in American popular music at this time. Not just country music — popular music. He had won five Grammy Awards in 1965, a feat so absurd that the Recording Academy quietly restructured its country categories afterward. He was one week away from winning five more for “King of the Road.” He had just signed a deal for his own NBC variety show. He was on the cover of everything. He was everywhere.

He also, according to everyone who knew him at the time, had been awake for about a week straight on amphetamines (I wrote an article about the Nashville pill scene at the time that could further explain the country music fascination with drugs in the ‘60s).

Roger’s lyrics and song structures may be a clue for a lot of people, but to be blunt —Roger was an incredibly special person. With today’s cultural awareness of mental disorders, I guarantee many of Roger’s peers would have recommended that he should have been evaluated by a psychiatrist at some point — but that sort of recommendation is common for people who are incredibly gifted. There’s another pattern to loook at.

Roger was odd. But creatives like odd. Right?

Now, Roger’s guitarist — the magnificent Thumbs Carlisle, was with him. Thumbs played guitar with a bizarre, patented technique that looked wrong and sounded extraordinary. He was wearing a Batman t-shirt under his sport coat. He was also smoking a cigarette on camera. For those seeking inside knowledge on Nashville — this is typically what an early morning shift on Broadway looks like, too. But this was 1966 and it wasn’t on lower Broad. It was on live television.

Let the chaos begin.

Before I start this, I have to tell you — the show is an hour long.
Think of what is being said next as a sort of “highlight” reel. Don’t fret, though. I’ll include the whole show at the bottom of the article for you to have a drink with later on.

The show opens and Roger is already at the desk, center stage on a stool, before anyone has a chance to establish any sort of law and order. Ralph introduces the program. Roger immediately calls it the Charlie Louvin Show.

Charlie Louvin is not hosting the show. It is not the Charlie Louvin Show.

This is the first thirty seconds.

Ralph, a man with a professional amount of patience, absorbs this and keeps moving. He asks about Charlie. Roger tells him he doesn’t like Charlie. Ralph tries to pivot. Roger mentions UCLA and then asks Ralph if he caught that — UCLA — with the particular pointed emphasis of a man delivering a joke only half the room will understand. This is, by most accounts, a reference to Roger’s recent experiments with LSD in California. Ralph changes the subject. Roger mentions that their mutual friend Don Bowman had just come back from visiting him out west, that Don “brought back all of Roger’s jokes.” No telling what else he brought back, says Roger. He then mimes smoking a joint, on live Nashville television, at six in the morning, in 1966.

The people off-camera lose their composure completely.

Ralph Emery does not.

At the ten-minute mark, Thumbs Carlisle joins them at the desk and the situation accelerates. There are inside jokes nobody in the audience is meant to understand. There is giggling that has no clear origin. The energy in the room is the energy of people who have been awake so long that the membrane between funny and terrifying has dissolved entirely.

Roger announces he’s had laryngitis all week. He may have trouble singing. He sings anyway — “Husbands and Wives,” a song he wrote during a car ride on Thanksgiving, one of the genuinely great country songs of his career. Even hollowed out, running on fumes and chemicals, the man could sing. The talent was never the problem. Or is it? Does talent turn people into Roger Miller? Sometimes, I guess.

Then he tries to play “Do-Wacka-Do.” He stops in the middle to invite Jerry Allison — formerly of The Crickets, Buddy Holly’s drummer, a man who had survived his own share of music industry wreckage (literally wreckage - look back on the Buddy Holly article) — to come over and sit at the kit. The song gets going again. Thumbs takes a solo. Roger stops everything.

“We always do a highly informal show,” he tells the camera. “The higher we get, the more informal we are.”

On live television. In Nashville. In 1966. I love it.

Charlie Louvin, the professional, eventually comes out and does his work. He plays his new song, “To Tell the Truth, I Told a Lie.” He is dignified. He is composed. He is a man who has just buried his brother and still showed up, still sang, still carried himself like someone who understood what the music was supposed to mean. At the fifty-minute mark, he plays a medley of the old hits and closes with “Less and Less” — a song written by Roger Miller, the man currently dissolving on the couch beside him.
For a talk show of any sort, this is the Odd Couple.

At some point Roger mentions that he’s been working on a book of philosophical musings. He describes it with total sincerity. The book, as far as anyone knows, was never finished. Somewhere there may be a manuscript. Roger asleep over it, probably. I need to ask his son, Dean — if that manuscript exists.

He tells a story about falling asleep in a meeting with the film director Otto Preminger. “The bigger they are, the less I care,” he says. My God — Roger lives on a plane of existence that I wish I could exist in.

The show eventually comes to an end. The band plays out. The guests laugh and dance.

And Ralph Emery smiles the smile of a man who doesn’t get paid enough to babysit Roger Miller on live television.

What happened after?

A week later on down the road, Roger Miller would win six Grammy Awards. I wonder if he slept at all between the Opry Almanac and the Grammys? Six months later, his NBC variety show would debut. Unfortunately in 1968, the show would be cancelled, the momentum broken, the crossover moment passed. The speed and the chaos and the genius were all the same thing, and they burned at the same rate.

Charlie Louvin would keep working. He always kept working. That’s the Louvin way — you absorb the catastrophe and you go back out and you sing.

Ralph Emery would go on to host television for thirty more years. He would greet the Byrds with hostility in 1968. They would write “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man” about him. He would become one of the most powerful men in Nashville broadcasting. He would outlast almost everyone.

But on March 8, 1966, at six in the morning, on a television set decorated like a kitchen and beaming out across Tennessee to a handful of early risers who had no idea what they were watching, Roger Miller looked into the camera with eyes that had not closed in days and was the funniest, strangest, most alive person on earth.

That tape still exists. Merry Christmas, kids.

Two Women Worth Knowing

Before the story, you need to know who these women were.

Dottie West was born Dorothy Marie Marsh on October 11, 1932, in McMinnville, Tennessee — the eldest of ten children raised in poverty, with a father whose abuse eventually landed him in prison. She worked her way through Tennessee Polytechnic Institute on a music scholarship, married steel guitarist Bill West, and spent years driving from Cleveland to Nashville on weekends, knocking on every door she could find. When RCA’s Chet Atkins finally signed her, she rewarded him with “Here Comes My Baby” — a song she wrote herself, a Top Ten country hit, and the record that earned her a Grammy in 1964 as the first female country artist to ever win one. She became a Grand Ole Opry member that same year. Through the late sixties and seventies she racked up duet hits with Jim Reeves, Don Gibson, and Kenny Rogers, and wrote the “Country Sunshine” jingle for Coca-Cola that crossed over to the pop charts and won a Clio Award. By the late seventies she was a legitimate crossover star. By the mid-eighties, bad investments and a changing industry had dragged her into bankruptcy. The IRS auctioned off her possessions. Kenny Rogers gave her a car. She kept showing up to the Opry anyway.

Jeannie Seely was born July 6, 1940, in Titusville, Pennsylvania — farm country, a long way from Music Row — and she was singing on local radio by age eleven. She drove herself to Los Angeles in her early twenties with everything she owned, took a secretarial job at Liberty Records just to get inside the business, and started writing songs. One of those songs caught the ear of Dottie West. West recorded it, and then told Seely: Nashville is where you go to learn. Seely arrived in 1965 with fifty dollars. Within a year she had a record deal with Monument and a song called “Don’t Touch Me” that hit the Top Five. In 1967 she won the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry — the first Pennsylvania native to become a member, and later the first woman to regularly host its segments. She appeared on the Opry stage 5,397 times before she died in August 2025. More than any other artist in its hundred-year history.

Two women. Two Grammys. Two careers that left a mark on this music that time hasn’t worn away.

This is the story of friendship that supersedes death.

Nashville

Dottie West is the reason Jeannie Seely ever came to this city.

It started the way the best things in this music do — with a song. West recorded a Seely-penned track titled “It Just Takes Practice” for her 1965 album Dottie West Sings, and the two built a friendship from there. West told Seely, plain and simple: Nashville is where you go to learn. Seely arrived with fifty dollars and a voice with so much soul, it could strip the paint off the walls of the Ryman. Within two years she had a Grammy.

But the friendship wasn’t built on career favors. It ran deeper than that. Seely would later say that her admiration for Dottie West began long before they ever met — back home in Pennsylvania, watching West on the Landmark Jamboree television show, drawn immediately to her voice, her class, her style, her presence. “Once we met in person,” Seely recalled years later, “that admiration only grew because I got to see what kind of person she was, how kind and how generous, and just plain fun. She was the kind of girl you want for a friend.”

1977

Jeannie Seely was involved in a near-fatal automobile accident that left her with serious multiple injuries. The historical record is quiet on the specific details — the where, the cause, the full inventory of damage done to her body. I’ve heard rumors. Jeannie and I went out to lunch one day and she said to me, “If I told you how hard my other friends were partying back then, then I’d be telling on myself too because I with them.” I loved her so.

But what the record does preserve, in Seely’s own words spoken years later, is this: when it happened, Dottie West was there as much as she possibly could be.

That’s it. That’s the whole fact. And it’s enough.

West showed up. She came through. And Jeannie Seely healed up, got back on her feet, and resumed a career that would eventually log more Grand Ole Opry performances than any artist in the institution’s hundred-year history. Facts.

You want to know what Dottie West gave Jeannie Seely? She gave her Nashville. And then, when Nashville nearly took her out, she gave her the encouragement and help to come back.

The Road Takes Back What It Gives

The cruel part of the story comes fourteen years later.

On August 30, 1991, Dottie West was scheduled to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. She was 58 years old, coming off a brutal decade — bad investments, a bankruptcy, an IRS auction that stripped her of her possessions. The car she was driving that night was a Chrysler New Yorker that Kenny Rogers had given her after the auction took everything else.

It stalled on Harding Road.

Her 81-year-old neighbor, George Thackston, spotted her stranded on the side of the road and offered her a ride. West was already running late. She urged him to hurry.

Thackston lost control of his car on the exit ramp to Opryland — going 55 miles per hour on a ramp posted for 25. The vehicle went airborne and slammed into a concrete divider.

West didn’t appear to be badly hurt. That’s what the officers on the scene reported. That’s what some witnesses said. She walked away from it, or something close to it.

But a medical evaluation told the real story: a ruptured spleen, a lacerated liver, internal bleeding that her body couldn’t stop. She endured surgery after surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received 30 units of blood. On September 4, 1991 — five days after the crash — her heart gave out while she was being prepared for another operation.

She was on her way to the Opry. Same as she’d always been. Still showing up, still running toward the stage, right up until the end.

Every Damn Light in Heaven

The story doesn’t end there, because Jeannie Seely wasn’t going to let it.

Since West’s death in 1991, Seely became the most tireless keeper of her flame. She launched the annual Dottie West Birthday Bash in 2016. She campaigned for years for West’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The induction finally came in 2018 — twenty-seven years after West’s death, but it came. Seely took the stage alongside West’s family to accept the honor. She talked about Dottie’s love of candles — how she kept them everywhere, all of them burning at once.

“I can’t help but think,” Seely said, “that she’s gonna have every damn light in heaven burning tonight.”

On the 25th anniversary of the crash, Seely drove out to the Briley Parkway exit on Interstate 40 — the exact spot where the car went off the ramp — and placed a memorial cross.

She stood on the side of the road. The same road. And she marked it. Made sure nobody forgot what happened there, or who was lost.

Some Debts You Carry Because You Want To

I keep thinking of the whole ying yang effect with this friendship.

Dottie West pulls a young woman from Pennsylvania toward Nashville. Dottie West holds that same woman together after a crash almost kills her. Then a crash kills Dottie West. And Jeannie Seely spends the rest of her life — thirty-four years — making sure the world knows who Dottie West was.

Think of a special person that has passed on that’s helped you along the way. Some debts you carry not because you have to, but because the person who helped you was worth carrying. Because letting them fade — letting the years and the noise swallow what they built — is a kind of betrayal you won’t live with.

Jeannie Seely wouldn’t live with that.

She was there as much as she possibly could be.

She learned that from Dottie.

There are places that exist outside of time.

Not because anything supernatural happened inside of them — though God knows enough whiskey got consumed in those rooms to surely qualify — but because the right people were in the right place when the world was still young enough to mean something.

Possum Holler was one of those places. And like most things worth grieving, it's gone now. Gone in the most Nashville way imaginable. Not one. Not two. And not even three. What do I mean by that?

The first Possum Holler opened where Robert’s Western World is currently remodeling and growing into on Lower Broadway. You read me right.

The second Possum Holler was in Printer’s Alley.

And then there was The George Jones Museum on 2nd Avenue.

All gone. But we will get to that here in a bit. First, let’s talk about a guy.

The Possum

George Glenn Jones was born in a log cabin in Saratoga, Texas, on September 12, 1931, which is either a detail or a prophecy depending on how you look at it. By the time he planted his flag in Nashville in the early 1960s, he had already bled enough music out of himself to fill a cemetery full of corpses. And that voice. The voice. George’s voice was a living thing — not just a talent or a gift. It was a living, writhing creature that lived somewhere between his ribs and his spine and only came out when the pain was real enough to pursuade it to. Men cried listening to George Jones and didn’t feel ashamed about it. Any song delivered by George Jones’ tongue was a nuclear bomb to the heart.

George was called The Possum. Not because he asked for it. Because a disc jockey named Slim Watts at KRTM in Beaumont, Texas decided that Jones’s cropped hair and strange, luminous eyes and that particular shape of his pointy nose made him look like a nocturnal rodent creature that hisses and plays dead. The nickname caught the way all the best nicknames do — like a fishhook. The more you pull against it, the deeper it sets. Jones eventually did what every smart man does when losing an argument: he owned it. Possum this. Possum that. Songs. T-shirts. And in 1967, a nightclub on Nashville’s lower Broadway that he named Possum Holler.

Some men open a bar because they’re drunks. Some men open a bar because they’re businessmen. George Jones opened a bar because he understood that the music needed a room. A real room. Not a stage with velvet ropes and a promoter hovering by the door counting heads. A room where the talent bled through the wallpaper and the band knew every song ever written and the night could turn into anything at any moment, and frequently did.. and well.. alcohol probably didn’t hurt the idea, either.

Thy Holy Block

Stand on lower Broadway and 5th in 1967 and close your eyes. To your right, Ernest Tubb’s Record Shop, that square-shouldered monument to the music, where you could walk in off the street and buy a copy of anything that mattered. To your left, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge — that purple-painted sanctuary where Hank Williams used to slip out the back door of the Ryman between Opry sets and find his “medicine”. That’s all I’m saying about Tootsie’s. And across the alley, the Ryman Auditorium itself, the Mother Church of Country Music, that old gospel tabernacle turned holy shrine, its stained-glass windows watching over the whole crooked block like a deacon who’s seen too much to be surprised by anything.. and let me tell you boys, she’s seen a lot.

That was the neighborhood. That was the air you breathed. Possum Holler opened right in the middle of all of it, on the top floor of an old building, high ceilings and exposed bones and the particular smell of a room that’s been filled with cigarette smoke and honest effort for many years. Jones described it himself, in his autobiography I Lived to Tell It All, the way a man describes a place he loves and has already lost: “There was hardly ever a shortage of talent inside the old room, which had a high ceiling and was located on the top floor of an old building. The club was open during the days when Nashville’s country stars were an unofficial family.”

Sad to read that.

An unofficial family. What Jones was describing was the community between artists and musicians in Nashville at that time. A specific, brief, unrepeatable civilization that existed inside that old building and many more on lower Broadway, where the rules were unwritten, each artist had a unique sound and everybody knew everybody’s name and what they’d been through to get to that god-forsaken town.

The Jones Boys — George’s own road band — became the house band when they weren’t touring. Imagine you’re a young songwriter or a visiting act or a Saturday night Opry performer who just got done playing the Ryman, and you walk up those stairs, and waiting for you is one of the finest working bands in the biz and they’re ready to back you up on anything you want to play. No rehearsal time. Just tell them the key and you’re gold.

What happened next, on any given evening, might include Merle Haggard. Might include Willie Nelson. Dolly Parton. Waylon Jennings. Kris Kristofferson, who was still writing songs for other people and bartending at the Tally-Ho Tavern over on 17th, turning up to pitch a tune or just to sit in the dark and listen. Charley Pride. Kenny Rogers. Porter Wagoner in that rhinestone suit that could stop traffic in a blackout. Dottie West. The Killer himself — Jerry Lee Lewis — who would play the second Possum Holler in Printer’s Alley so many times in the late seventies that the setlist archives still have his name in the calendar like he had a standing reservation. The thought of George Jones and Jerry Lee Lewis in the same building in the 1970s scares the hell out of me.

It was, by any measurement, the most concentrated gathering of country music royalty that existed outside the Opry stage itself. Except at the Opry, the pews were separated from the pulpit. At Possum Holler, everybody was in the same room, and anybody might end up behind the microphone.

The songwriters came too. This is the part that gets overlooked, and it matters. Possum Holler wasn’t just a performance venue — it was a market for songs like any of those Broadway bars once were. A pitch room. Songwriters would come in with their notebooks and their nerve and find a willing ear in the crowd, because that crowd was the industry. Music Row had its offices and its publishing deals, but Music Row kept regular hours. Possum Holler kept different hours entirely. The kind of hours where the real decisions get made. Back when locals hung out downtown.

A Good Room Don’t Die Easy

The first Possum Holler closed in the early 1970s. I’ll get to the reasons.

But a good room doesn’t die easy.

Enter Shug Baggott.

Baggott was a Nashville hustler — the specific kind of Nashville hustler who knew everybody, owed everybody, and could talk a drowning man into buying an anchor if the price was right. He found Jones at the bottom of a very particular valley: newly divorced, chemically unreliable, spiritually hollowed out, the kind of famous that had curdled into its own kind of loneliness. Baggott signed on as his manager. He had a vision. He had a location. Kenny Rogers — yes, that Kenny Rogers — bought the building in Printer’s Alley and gifted it to Baggott, an act of generosity that history has not fully interrogated. And Baggott convinced Jones to put his name on a new room.

That was the second Possum Holler. March 1975. Corner of Commerce Street and Printer’s Alley, not but a stone’s throw from the original, just couple blocks up with the same soul. Printer’s Alley had been Nashville’s after-dark nerve center since the 1940s — a narrow canyon of neon and noise where Hank Williams had played and Waylon had cut his teeth and the whole sooty mythology of Nashville nightlife had been written and rewritten for thirty years. Late Nights, Country Stars and Showgirls. The Holler fit right in. It probably felt like coming home.

It was an immediate hit. Tourists came. Country fans came. The regulars came back. Jones had less involvement with this one than the original — his name was on it, but the operation ran on Baggott’s engine. And Baggott’s engine, it turned out, ran on more than ambition.

There’s a story Jones told himself, in a candid television interview, that you need to know. One night — he didn’t name the date, didn’t need to — Jones was in bad shape. Not performing shape. The kind of bad shape that had become its own weather system around him by the mid-seventies, unpredictable and total. Baggott pulled him into the back and put something in front of him. Cocaine. “Just sniff it,” Baggott told him, “and you’ll play all night”. Jones did. And he played all night. And when Ralph Emery asked him later if that was the night he got addicted, Jones didn’t hesitate. It was. When I found something good, Jones said, I just got all of everything I could get. I didn’t want to lose that feeling, so I’d overdo it, overdo it, overdo it.

The room that was supposed to save George Jones was, on at least one particular night, the room where George Jones got handed the thing that would nearly kill him. The man who handed it to him was the man running the room.

Baggott eventually did three years in federal prison for cocaine trafficking. He refused to cooperate, refused to name names, did the time without complaint. When he got out, he became a preacher.

Jones meanwhile kept the room going, kept his name above the door, kept the music playing through all of it. That was the thing about him. The personal catastrophe was always running concurrently with the professional grace. Two separate engines, same chassis, both running at full throttle in opposite directions. How the whole machine didn’t come apart sooner is a question for a different article.

What the room gave the world — in spite of all of it, or maybe because of it — was five years of some of the finest live country music that ever happened in a building that wasn’t the Ryman.

Jerry Lee Lewis played there in October of 1977. Came back the following March with Margo Smith on the bill. Came back again in October of ‘78. Came back again in April of 1979. The man kept returning to that room the way certain people keep returning to the places where something amazing happened to them.

And through all of it, the most frequent visitor — the man who showed up so reliably that he might as well have had his name on the barstool — was Roy Acuff. Who else, but the King?

Remember when I told you about the first Possum Holler closing?

Sadly, most good things end.

Sometimes they end because a toilet overflows.

The plumbing in that old building gave out. Specifically, the plumbing on the Possum Holler floor gave out in the specific direction of the Roy Acuff Exhibits below. The water came through the ceiling. And not just water.

Acuff called the manager — a man named Billy — into the office. He was calm. This is the detail that gets me every time. The man was calm. He told Billy that Possum Holler would have to close.

Billy, who loved the place the way everyone who worked there loved the place, said: “But why? You love this place.”

And Roy Acuff, the King of Country Music, said: “I know it, son. I know it. But we just can’t have turds inside my exhibits.”

And that was the end of that.

What remains

Downtown? George Jones related? Nothing but songs, stories and what the Country Music Hall of Fame has behind it’s giant stone walls and buried deep in the archives.

The second Possum Holler closed in 1980. I can probably name 100 reasons why.

The building stayed. The alley stayed. Nashville kept going, kept changing, kept eating its own history at the rate it always has, which is the rate of a man who is always hungry and never full. The Ryman got renovated. Tootsie’s got a gift shop. Ernest Tubb’s record store held on for another thirty years before got kicked in the teeth. Lower Broadway is now a neon theme park, a tribute band to itself, volume turned up to eleven so you can’t concentrate on what’s no longer down there.

They tried again, of course. In 2015, Jones’s widow Nancy and her business partner Kirk West opened The George Jones on 2nd Avenue — a four-story complex with a museum, a smokehouse, a rooftop bar with views of the Cumberland River, and a serious collection of memorabilia that Nancy herself donated. His stage outfits. His John Deere riding mower — the one he famously drove eight miles to the liquor store after Tammy took his car keys, because a man without a vehicle is not necessarily a man without a plan. The place did right by him. It tried.

Then West got convicted of bank fraud and went to prison. The venue got sold to an investor group who named themselves Possum Holdings, LLC, which is either a tribute or an irony depending on your mood. Then the pandemic hit and shut Nashville’s doors. Then the Christmas Day bombing of 2020 went off one block away on 2nd Avenue and shut them again. They fought back. They kept trying. By December 2021, the math had stopped working, and they closed for good. The museum collection — every stitch of it — was promised a new home somewhere. I believe they later broke up everything and sold it off, but I could be mistaken.

So that’s two Possum Hollers and one George Jones, all closed. Three attempts across fifty years to give the man a room that would last.

There is no Possum Holler anymore. There is no George Jones museum or bar. What’s left are streets, and the noise, and the neon, and very rare occasions that a band plays “He Stopped Loving Her Today” for a group of twenty year old bachelorettes that walk out of the door complaining it’s not Morgan Wallen .

The thing about places like Possum Holler is that they don’t know they’re legendary while they’re happening. The legend is what’s left when the room is gone, the furniture is sold, the band gets a new gig and the building gets repurposed and the last person who was there on a Tuesday night in 1977 when Jerry Lee Lewis sat down at the piano and played until four in the morning finally closes their eyes for the last time. Kind of grim, isn’t it?

What remains is the fact of it. The knowledge that it happened. That for a window of time — maybe fifteen years across two locations, two rooms, one address and then another — there existed a place in Nashville where great music and hillbilly debauchery ran amuck. Where the family was intact. Where the hierarchy was about talent and great tunes.

Well, I thought it was worth talking about.

The Possum understood grief better than most any who ever stood at a microphone. He made art out of it. He knew what it cost and he paid the bill anyway, every time, every night, every song.

As for Possum Holler —I’m going to assume one was a goner due to bad business dealings (don’t quote me). As for the other..

Roy Acuff killed it with a plumbing problem and one of the greatest exit lines in the history of country music.

I always paid attention to lyrics.

I remember the first time I heard Hank Williams sing and KNEW it was Hank Williams. I heard “Hey Good Lookin’” in the womb — I’m fairly certain — but I remember a little boy in the backseat of a car on I-75 Southbound to Tennessee from Detroit listening to “Lovesick Blues” for the first time.

“I Got A Feelin’ Called The Blues... Oh Lord, Since My Baby Said Goodbye...”

Whoa. This was pain.

And from Hank on, I spent the rest of my life examining country music with a fine-toothed comb. There’s one prominent thing I’ve noticed as a pattern. There’s a lot of beautiful major chord melodies with lyrics so painful they can tear your heart out and stomp on it.

It’s almost contradicting. Why?

Why didn’t these artists and songwriters really want to evoke the pain they felt by putting these lyrics to a dreary minor key melody? Why dress a wound in Sunday clothes?

They tried it out in Colorado — and it hits hard.

I was forever a fan after my first time listening to Slim Cessna’s Auto Club.

Who? Let me tell you.

There is a version of American music history that includes the Denver Sound. In that version, the story of where country went dark — where it picked up the banjo and the accordion and the black robe and started preaching damnation from a hole in the ground — gets told properly. The names get said. The records get played. The conversation happens. That version does not exist. This is the version that does.

What happened in Denver in the late 1980s was not supposed to happen anywhere, let alone there. Gothic country — if you want to call it that, and some people don’t, and those people are correct to be suspicious of the term — did not emerge from Nashville, Tennessee. It did not emerge from Austin, Texas. It did not drunkenly crawl off of Bourbon Street or from any Appalachian holler, though it carries the sound of all or those places in some form or another.

It came from Denver, Colorado.

From a city that most people associate with ski lodges and craft beer and the Broncos. From a group of musicians who had grown up inside evangelical Christianity, absorbed its terrors and its ecstasy, and then turned it into something that would have made their preachers weep.

The Denver Sound is the most important American music movement you were never taught about.

Patient Zero

The story begins in 1988 with a band called The Denver Gentlemen. That name tells you everything and nothing. Jeffrey-Paul Norlander, David Eugene Edwards, eventually Slim Cessna — these were young men from church backgrounds, which is the only background that produces this kind of art. When you are raised in the language of sin and redemption, of fire and mercy, of the blood of the lamb and the wrath to come, that language does not leave you. It rearranges itself. It finds new containers.

The Denver Gentlemen were playing with early jazz, gospel, country, and roots music in a configuration nobody had assembled before. Piano. Old-fashioned accordion. Chimes. A Montgomery Ward guitar. The brother of one member sometimes played a Black & Decker saw. A glockenspiel showed up. This was not just being eccentric for the sake of it. This was the sound of people reaching back past the clean, radio-friendly version of American music and grabbing the older and much stranger thing hiding underneath it — the thing that still had some sharp teeth.

“American Gothic hymns with old-wrold carny music” — that was the phrase that someone reached for when describing it. And, it’s not like they are wrong. They just aren’t done with the description, either. It’s also a sèance. A tent revival where the congregation was already dead.

The recordings The Denver Gentlemen made were released too late to capture what was actually happening in those rooms. By the time the documents surfaced, they had already become artifacts. Legendary, yet frozen. The band was always better understood as a transmission more than as a catalog.

The Splitting

In 1992, the body broke apart. David Eugene Edwards left to form 16 Horsepower with Jean-Yves Tola. Slim Cessna left to form Slim Cessna’s Auto Club. This was not a collapse of a sound. This was patient zero becoming an epidemic.

16 Horsepower is the band you pull out when you need to explain what the Denver Sound means to someone who has never heard it. The banjo, the chemnitzer accordion, the gospel imagery — not as decoration but as the actual subject matter. Edwards had grown up the grandson of a Nazarene preacher, and those Saturdays spent watching his grandfather deliver the Word to whoever would stand still long enough had not passed through him without leaving marks. His songs were about conflict, redemption, punishment, and guilt. They were not metaphorical about it. They meant it. They played it like a man standing in front of a congregation that was also a jury.

The band was, by any measure, substantially more famous in Europe than in America. The Netherlands and Belgium really liked them. David Eugene Edwards introduced an adoring European market to what the Denver Sound was before most Americans had any idea it existed. Sadly, that makes sense.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club took a different angle on the same compound. Where Edwards carried the scripture like a weapon, Cessna carried it like a wound. Jello Biafra, of all people, put it best: Slim Cessna’s Auto Club was “the country band that plays the bar at the end of the world.” That description adhered because it was simply, structurally accurate. The Auto Club performed on bills with Johnny Cash and the Dresden Dolls. That range tells you something. That range tells you everything you need to know.

What The Sound Actually Was

I want to be as precise as possible about this, because imprecision is how things get lost and forgotten. The Denver Sound was not gothic rock with banjos, alt-country that got sad or a form cowpunk that got spiritual. It was something that had no clean antecedent, though you can see the outline of it if you hold Tom Waits and Nick Cave up against the old Appalachian death ballads and the sanctified gospel sounds of the rural South. The outline is there. But the Denver Sound did not trace it. It stepped directly through it.

What these bands understood — and what the Nashville machine has never understood and will never understand — is that the darkness in American roots music is not a flaw that should be painted over or corrected. It is not a mere phase the music went through before it got clean and commercial. It is the actual substance of the music. The murder ballads, the chain gang songs, the old-time gospel that could not show the difference between terror and love — these were the entire point. The Denver Sound followed that without apology and without irony, which is the only way to follow it honestly. Go for it’s jugular.

The instrumentation followed from the theology of it. You do not play this music on a clean electric guitar with studio compression. You play it on the instruments that were present when the original realm was created — the fiddle, the banjo, the accordion, the human voice pushed to the edge of where sound becomes something else - think Southern Baptist minister. The cello showed up. The mandolin showed up. The drums were there, but they were not in front. The Denver bands were building a genre.

The Family Tree

If you trace the subsequent spread from patient zero, the shape of it is remarkable. Edwards moved through 16 Horsepower and into Wovenhand. Slim Cessna’s Auto Club cycled through players who became significant in their own right — Munly, Dwight Pentacost, others who went on to form or join the Kalamath Brothers, Tarantella, the Lee Lewis Harlots, Munly & The Lupercalaians Denver Broncos UK. Each one a mutation of the original signal, each one carrying enough of the source code to be recognizable.

Bob Ferbrache, who produced and engineered for multiple acts in this constellation, is a name that does not appear in the mainstream history books and should. DeVotchKa emerged from the same general proximity. The ecosystem was genuine and self-sustaining in a way that most regional scenes manage for about four years before they exhaust themselves or get bought.

Denver did not get bought. Denver got ignored, which is a very different kind of ending.

Why You Are Just Now Learning About This

This is the part of the story that I find genuinely instructive — which is to say, genuinely enraging. The Denver Sound was not obscure because it was bad or overlooked because it was uncommercial in some obvious way that made radio programmers throw up their hands. It was overlooked because it was inconvenient. Because it didn’t fit. Because American popular music, by the time the Denver Gentlemen were playing those rooms on Colfax Avenue, had already decided what country and folk music was and what it was not, and what the Denver Sound was doing was pulling the genre toward a history and sound that the industry had worked very hard to bury and sand down and make presentable.

The Nashville Sound had already happened. The great smoothing had already occurred years ago. Commercial country radio had already decided that the darkness and the terror and the authentic strangeness of American roots music was a liability rather than an asset. The Denver Sound arrived at that moment and said, with complete sincerity and zero interest in your approval: No.

Europe listened - the Netherlands and Belgium listened. The people who recognized what they were hearing listened. The American music industry looked at what was happening in Denver and declined to participate, and then eventually got around to calling the whole thing “gothic country” and filing it under “niche” and moving on. (Always funny how the deniers of a style of music are the ones always trying to give it a name).

There is nothing new about this story. The institution always does this. The institution did it to Hank. It did it to Lefty Frizzell. It did it to George Jones every time he refused to “modernize”. The institution has one move and it uses it on everyone who shows up with the actual thing instead of the approved replica. The Denver Sound showed up with the actual thing. The institution filed it under “niche”, smiled and went right back to work.. filing other art under the “niche” label.

Why Does It Matter Now?

I bring this up because we are living in a moment where the approved replica has become so thin that people can see through it. The search for something with weight — something with actual roots in the American experience rather than in a music marketing brief — has become more urgent. And the answer, or one of the answers, has been sitting in Denver since 1988, patiently waiting for someone to tell the story correctly.

The Denver Sound is not a museum piece. It is a living tradition, and it is the tradition that runs most directly from the original sources — from the gospel and the murder ballad and the Appalachian shape-note singing and the country blues — without stopping to clean itself up first. The people who built it understood something that most of the American music industry still does not: that the darkness is not a problem to be solved. It is the source of REAL and RAW material. And what do people in life need? Something they can empathize with and understand.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club recently announced they are breaking up. Thirty-plus years. The end of the bar at the end of the world. David Eugene Edwards is still making music under Wovenhand, still carrying the original transmission onward. The rest of the family tree is still out there, doing the work without much fanfare and without much institutional support, the same way they always had done.

I want you to know their names. I want you to go find the records. I want you to understand that the story of American music is bigger and stranger and darker and more honest than what gets handed to you by default. But, you already knew that.

The Denver Sound is part of that story. It deserves its proper chapter. And now, it’s on Substack.

Every Artist Has a Character

You learn a lot in this industry. Whether you are big or small. The time you spend around a place like Nashville can teach you a lot about how it runs just by keeping your eyes and ears open — watching the phenomenon of fame take over someone’s life, watching what it does to them, and watching what they decide to become because of it.

Here’s my free advice to any country music artist:

Sit down and think to yourself — what is my career adding to the country music zeitgeist?

It’s 2026. Take a look on Lower Broadway at any moment of the day or evening and I’ll tell you what you’re going to see. There will be a girl somewhere down there at any point in time wearing a flat brim cowgirl hat and bell bottoms. Why? Lainey Wilson. That’s usually what people think of aesthetically when they think of Lainey Wilson.

When I mention big boobs and blonde wigs, you think of Dolly Parton. The color black and trains, Johnny Cash.

Matter of fact, think of anyone you have ever heard this industry call a legend and you will be able to pick apart the characteristics of whoever they are talking about — most likely aesthetically first.

Every artist in this industry has a character. Even if they play the card of authenticity, the character is mostly an exaggerated version of who they really are — or sometimes altogether someone different. It doesn’t make it fraudulent. It makes it show business. Nashville has always known that. It just doesn’t like to say it out loud.

The Man Who Lived in a Hearse

David Allan Coe understood this from the moment he arrived.

After prison, Coe moved to Nashville, living in a hearse parked near the Ryman Auditorium while busking and pursuing music. Think about that image for a moment. A man sleeping in a hearse outside the Mother Church of Country Music. This is a man who was not going to NOT be noticed.

It worked. People who saw him thought he was a star of some sort, but didn’t know who he was, and so took to calling him The Rhinestone Cowboy — years before Glen Campbell created his huge number one.

He hadn’t released an album at this point. Just a persona.

The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy: Character I

With his mysterious rhinestone cowboy persona, he sometimes performed wearing a gaudy black rhinestone-studded suit, big black cowboy hat, and a black mask over his eyes, accessorized with silver skull earrings. He sometimes rode his Harley onstage as he shouted cuss words at the audience, which cussed back at him.

This was a fully constructed theatrical identity — name, costume, props, and mythology built around it. He titled his major label debut after it. He made a documentary about it. The 1975 KERA documentary follows the ex-convict turned outlaw country star performing, visiting his childhood home, and returning to a correctional institution. He was curating the narrative in real time, on camera, feeding the legend while it was still being born.

And then — when it stopped working — he retired it.

His wild, long hair, multiple earrings, flashy rhinestone suits, Harley Davidson biker boots, and football-sized belt buckles had become obstacles to getting people to take him seriously as a recording artist. Other singers continued to record and succeed with his material, but the author himself languished in obscurity. Rather than tone it down, Coe characteristically shoved the stereotypes in their faces. He retired the Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy persona and billed his new album as “David Allan Coe Rides Again as the Longhaired Redneck” — something equally off-putting to institution types.

Read that one more time. He retired the persona. Deliberately. Consciously. And replaced it with a new one. That is not the behavior of a man being authentically himself. That is the behavior of an actor that got a new gig.

The Long Haired Redneck: Character II

The Longhaired Redneck was a sharper, angrier character than the Rhinestone Cowboy. Where the Cowboy was theatrical — masked, rhinestoned, almost campy in its Roy Rogers’ arch-angel appearance— the Redneck was confrontational. During the outlaw movement heyday, Coe placed himself at the center of the scene with songs like “Longhaired Redneck,” which featured lyrics about performing in dive bars “where bikers stare at cowboys who are laughing at the hippies who are praying they’ll get out of here alive.”

This was a man writing himself into the culture. Putting himself in the room, on the stage, in the mythology — as a character who existed at the intersection of every counterculture at once, belonging fully to none of them. Coe claimed a diverse fan base that included bikers, doctors, lawyers, and bankers. It seemed as if this was done purposefully.

And his peers knew it. Among the outlaw country crowd, Coe was often seen as a poser. Waylon Jennings called out Coe’s prison stories, claiming they were exaggerated for effect. Many of Coe’s peers questioned the authenticity of his wild tales, seeing him as more of a showman than a true outlaw.

That’s Waylon Jennings calling you a fraud. The face of outlaw country, telling you that your version of “outlaw” is just a performance. Make of that what you will.

The Underground Provocateur: Character III

Then there are the records that almost ended everything.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Coe released a series of underground albums — X-rated, racist, deliberately transgressive material distributed through biker magazines and later his own website. The content was kept off mainstream shelves by design. According to Coe, it was Shel Silverstein who talked him into recording the first X-rated album, telling him to go into the studio after hearing what Coe had been playing privately.

Shel Silverstein. The man who wrote children’s books and composed some of the most tender, witty songs in the American songbook — he is the one who green-lit the most offensive material of Coe’s career.

That detail alone should tell you something about the nature of what was being made. This was provocation as a creative exercise, taken further than it should have gone, by a man whose instinct was always to push past every boundary in the room.

Coe consistently rejected the labels that followed him. He argued the recordings were intended as satire, shaped by a persona he adopted while associating with outlaw motorcycle culture. In interviews, Coe maintained that his songwriting reflected character work rather than personal belief, and that the material had been misunderstood.

Character work. His words. Not mine.

The Catalog of Contradictions

Here is where the argument becomes impossible to dismiss.

The same man who recorded that really bad underground material wrote “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)” — a song so quietly devastating that Tanya Tucker took it to number one. He wrote “Take This Job and Shove It,” a working-class anthem that became a cultural touchstone. He recorded “The Ride” — one of the most spiritually reverent pieces of music in the country canon, a ghost story about Hank Williams Sr. built around the only question that has ever mattered in this town: boy, can you make folks feel what you feel inside?

Given his reputation, his occasional turns doing soft ballads come across as surprisingly gentle — like his biggest chart hit, “Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile,” or “Tanya Montana,” a song about his daughter.

A song about his daughter. Written with the tenderness of a man with heart.

Now you tell me — does that sound like the same guy? Or does it sound like several men living inside one guy?

The catalog doesn’t lie. A man capable of “The Ride” and “Would You Lay With Me” is not a man whose inner world is defined by the ugliest material he ever put to tape. The ugliest material is the character talking. The songs that last — the ones that still make the hair stand up on the back of your neck — those are the man underneath all of that.

The Mask and The Face

Every artist in Nashville is building a character whether they admit it or not. The question isn’t whether you’re doing it. The question is whether the character you’re building is serving your music — or consuming it.

Some artists never find a mask to wear. Some try on several before their career ever lifts off the ground. Donny Lytle became Donny Young, and Donny Young became Johnny Paycheck — a name borrowed from a boxer, worn by a man who spent decades trying to live up to the violence and recklessness it implied, and who paid for it accordingly. The name came first. The mythology followed. That’s how it works.

David Allan Coe is the answer to what happens when you can’t tell the difference anymore between the mask and the face underneath it — when the character you built to get in the room becomes the only thing the room will ever talk about, and the music that should have been your legacy gets left standing in the parking lot.. outside of the Country Music Hall of Fame, if you catch my drift.

He had the chops. He had the voice. He had the song sense to write for Tanya Tucker and Johnny Paycheck and to record one of the most haunting tributes to Hank Williams that country music has ever heard. And he buried all of it — or at least gave the opposition everything it needed to bury it for him — under personas engineered to provoke, designed to transgress, and ultimately unable to distinguish between outlaw and irredeemable.

There’s a lesson in that. A hard one.

I am not here to tell you that country music was a Masonic conspiracy. I’m not here to tell you that America was a Masonic conspiracy.

I am here to tell you something stranger than that: it wasn’t a conspiracy at all, and the facts are still remarkable.

When you look at the men who built the architecture of country music — the ones who recorded first, who established the institutions, who got inducted first into the halls of fame — a pattern emerges that nobody in the business talks about with any seriousness, anymore. These men were Freemasons. The accounts were documented, lodge-numbers are known, connections, affiliations, etc. We have a nice paper trail of evidence you can follow if you’re willing to do the work.

I did the digging. Here’s what I found:

The Father

Jimmie Rodgers is where this story begins, because Jimmie Rodgers is where country music begins. The Singing Brakeman. The Blue Yodeler. The man who in six years of recording before tuberculosis killed him in 1933 essentially invented a genre. He was thirty-five years old when he died. I wrote about this. Go back if you haven’t read it yet.

Jimmie Rodgers was a member of John L. Spinks Lodge, No. 507, Meridian, Mississippi, under the Grand Lodge of Mississippi. He was born in Meridian. He worked the railroad out of Meridian. He was buried in Meridian. And when they laid him out, his funeral was held at the Temple Theater — a building constructed by the Hamasa Shriners between 1923 and 1927, one of the largest stage facilities in the South at the time, owned and operated by a Masonic appendant body. It is where Rodgers had performed during his career. It is where they brought him at the end of it.

Think about that. The Father of Country Music lived his life within the Masonic fraternity. His concerts. His funeral. The same building, the same institution, the beginning and the end.

When the Country Music Hall of Fame was established in 1961, Rodgers was one of the first three inductees. He has never left the top of the canon. Every country musician who came after him learned from him directly or learned from someone who did. The fraternity he belonged to is usually mentioned, if at all, as a biographical footnote.

But I’m not surprised by that.

The King

Roy Acuff is the second name you need to know.

Acuff joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1938. In 1942, he co-founded Acuff-Rose Music with songwriter Fred Rose — the first major Nashville-based country music publishing company, which would go on to sign Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and the Everly Brothers. He ran the Opry as its dominant personality for four decades. In 1962, he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame as its first living member.

Acuff was initiated as an Entered Apprentice at the East Nashville Freemasonry Lodge in 1943, raised to Master Mason in 1944, and made a 33rd Degree Mason on October 21, 1985.

Hold those two timelines side by side. In 1942, Acuff founds the publishing company that will become the backbone of Nashville’s music industry. In 1943, he walks into the East Nashville lodge and begins the degrees. He is at the absolute height of his powers — the most prominent figure in American country music — and he joins the fraternity.

The 33rd degree — the highest rank in the Scottish Rite — came forty-two years later. He was eighty-one years old. He had earned it over a lifetime.

The Roster

When Roy Acuff became the first living member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1962, at least seven other Masons had also been elevated to that same honor: Eddy Arnold, Gene Autry, Jimmie Davis, Tex Ritter, Jimmie Rodgers, Roy Rogers, and Hank Thompson.

Read that list again.

That is not a footnote. That is the founding canon of country music, and it is substantially composed of Freemasons.

Gene Autry was raised into Freemasonry in 1927 at Catoosa Lodge No. 185 in Catoosa, Oklahoma. He later became a 33rd degree Master Mason — a fact recorded on his headstone at Forest Lawn. His epitaph lists his Masonic degrees alongside his film career and his baseball team. He considered his rank worth carving in stone.

Tex Ritter became one of the founding members of the Country Music Association in Nashville and spearheaded the effort to build the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum — the institution itself. The man who built the hall was a Mason, at Metropolitan Lodge No. 646 in California. He is on the same list as the men who populated it.

Jimmie Davis — country singer, gospel writer, twice Governor of Louisiana, the man whose recording of “You Are My Sunshine” became that state’s official song — was a Mason. Hank Thompson, one of the architects of Western Swing and honky-tonk, was a Mason. Roy Rogers, Hollywood Lodge No. 355, raised in 1946. Eddy Arnold, East Nashville Lodge No. 560.

And then there is Mel Tillis.

Tillis was raised a Master Mason on December 16, 1984, at Branson Lodge No. 587 in Branson, Missouri. He became a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason in 1993. He was invested as Knight Commander Court of Honour in 1996. He was coroneted a 33rd Degree Mason at the House of the Temple in Washington, D.C. in 1998. In 1999, he was awarded the Grand Cross — the highest honor the Scottish Rite bestows.

His lodge brothers noted something else. Mel Tillis stuttered his entire life — a childhood bout of malaria had left him with a speech impediment that became the defining feature of his public persona, the thing audiences loved and laughed with him about. But when he recited Masonic ritual, the stutter disappeared. He had to concentrate on every word so carefully that the stammer simply stopped. He told his brothers that Freemasonry had given him, for the duration of those rites, a voice that worked the way he’d always wanted it to.

I don’t know what you do with that. I know I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

Franklin Lodge No. 7

Roy Clark — Hee Haw co-host, Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, one of the most technically gifted guitarists in the history of American music — was made a Mason at sight by the Grand Master of Oklahoma on December 9, 1987. He affiliated with Jenks Lodge No. 497 as a perpetual member and subsequently pursued the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and Shrine on his own initiative.

Burl Ives was initiated into Scottish Rite Freemasonry in 1927 and elevated to the 33rd Degree in 1987. He was later elected the Grand Cross.

And then there is Franklin Lodge No. 7 in Franklin, Tennessee, which deserves its own paragraph.

Little Jimmy Dickens — the rhinestone-covered 4’10” original who joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1948 and became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983 — was a 32nd Degree Freemason and a member of Franklin Lodge No. 7.

Brad Paisley — active country music star, three-time Grammy winner, Grand Ole Opry member since age 28 — is also a member of Franklin Lodge No. 7. He was inducted into the Scottish Rite on October 28, 2006, at the House of the Temple in Washington, D.C. He was accompanied that day by his father, Douglas Paisley, 33°.

What This Actually Was

Here is the argument I am not making: I am not arguing that the lodge got these men their record deals. I am not arguing that there were secret handshakes at the Victor Records offices in New York. I am not arguing for conspiracy.

I am arguing for something more precise and, in some ways, more interesting.

Freemasonry in the early twentieth century was one of the primary fraternal networks available to working men in the American South. It was accessible. It was local. It offered structure, community, mutual aid, and a framework of values — brotherhood, virtue, the idea that a man should improve himself — to men who often had very little formal institutional support. A railroad brakeman in Meridian, Mississippi in the 1920s who wanted to belong to something, to have standing in his community, to know other men of similar aspiration, might well have walked into a lodge.

Jimmie Rodgers walked into one. He did so before he was famous, before the Bristol Sessions, before any of it. The lodge didn’t make him famous. But the lodge was where men like him went.

What you see, when you map the Masonic membership across the founding generation of country music, is a picture of who these men were before the music made them legends. They were lodge members. They were community men. They believed in something larger than themselves, and they expressed it through the fraternity as surely as they expressed it through their music.

Roy Acuff built Acuff-Rose and signed Hank Williams and ran the Grand Ole Opry and reached the 33rd degree on October 21st, 1985. Gene Autry’s epitaph listed his Masonic rank alongside the achievements the entire world knew. Mel Tillis pursued the degrees for fifteen years until the Scottish Rite gave him their highest honor. These were not men who treated their Masonic membership as a casual affiliation. They treated it as part of their identity. And it was.

Sure, you can become an inactive Freemason - but once you are one, you always are one.

The Hall of Fame Number

Return one more time to that fact from 1962.

Eight of the early Country Music Hall of Fame inductees were documented Freemasons. The Hall was built by Tex Ritter, a Mason, through the Country Music Association he co-founded. The first living inductee was Roy Acuff, a 33rd Degree Mason. The first inductee of any kind — posthumously — was Jimmie Rodgers, a lodge member whose funeral was held in a Shriner-owned theater.

This is not a conspiracy. Conspiracies require coordination and secrecy and intent. What this is, is something more durable: a generation of men who came from a common culture, who belonged to a common institution, who built something extraordinary, and whose membership in that institution tells you something true about who they were and where they came from.

Country music was not built in boardrooms. It was built by men who drove two-lane highways, who worked railroads and ranches, who belonged to lodges and churches and attended barn dances, who understood fraternity as something you show up for week after week in the same room with the same men. Your brothers.

They built it with square and compass, and they built it to last.

Here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough..

Dimebag Darrell — one of the most ferocious, technically gifted, flat-out dangerous guitarists in the history of electric music — grew up in a recording studio. Not metaphorically. His father owned one. And his father was a country music songwriter and producer from Abilene, Texas, who co-wrote a Top 20 hit for Buck Owens and Emmylou Harris.

Wow, right?

The man most responsible for the sonic identity of Pantera — the band that essentially branded southern metal, the band that made Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven, the band that a generation of kids discovered and never recovered from — learned what a recording session looked like by watching his dad make country records.

That’s not just a fun fact.

Jerry Bob Abbott was born in Abilene, Texas in 1942. He came up the honest way — piano at eight, guitar at fifteen, honky tonk circuit by eighteen. He was a serious musician in the Texas tradition, which means he played hard rooms for working people who had no patience for anything that wasn’t real. He studied business in college, which gave him a practical edge most musicians never develop, and by 1973 he was working as a sound engineer — learning the recording desk the way you learn an instrument, from the inside out, by feel and repetition and honest failure.

By the late 1970s he was writing songs that were getting cut. Freddy Fender recorded one. Jerry put out singles of his own. He was building a career in the way careers actually get built — quietly, one session at a time, one song at a time.

Then in 1979 he co-wrote a song called “Play Together Again Again” with Buck Owens and Charles Stewart. Buck recorded it as a duet with Emmylou Harris. It hit number eleven on the country charts.

That matters more than it sounds. By 1979, Buck Owens was in a complicated stretch. Don Rich — his lead guitarist, the man whose Telecaster gave the Bakersfield Sound its defining edge — had died in a motorcycle accident in 1974 (see previous article on Don Rich). The hits had dried up. For many listeners, Buck had become the comedian from Hee Haw, not the hardcore honky-tonker he’d always been at heart. He needed a real song. Jerry Abbott helped write him one — and it turned out to be one of the last top chart hits Buck would ever have.

That’s a real line. That’s a real career. Most country songwriters would call it a life well spent and hang up their hat.

Jerry Abbott kept his hat on.

He had two sons. He raised them in Pantego, Texas — swallowed up now by the Fort Worth-Arlington sprawl, but in the 1970s still small enough to feel like its own world. He raised them around music. Around the studio he built there, Pantego Sound. Around the hiss of tape and the click of a metronome and the particular discipline required to make something that sounds effortless.

His older son was Vincent Paul, born in 1964. His younger son was Darrell Lance, born in 1966.

Jerry taught Darrell to play guitar. He gave him a guitar for his birthday — a Hondo Les Paul-style with a small Pignose amp — when Darrell was just twelve years old. He let both boys run loose in the studio, let them touch the equipment, encouraged them to experiment. As Darrell would later recall, his father told him: Son, you can either have a BMX bike, or you can have this. He pointed to the guitar. Darrell took the guitar.

What Jerry could not have fully anticipated was where the guitar would lead.

His sons fell in love with KISS and Black Sabbath and Van Halen. They fell in love with volume and distortion and the kind of electricity that country music had always carried underneath its surface but rarely let run this hot. In 1981, Darrell and Vinnie Paul co-founded a band. They called it Pantera.

Jerry Abbott became their manager. He opened Pantego Sound to them. He produced their first four albums — Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle, I Am the Night, and Power Metal — releasing them on a label he founded himself, Metal Magic Records, under the alias Jerry Eld’n. A country songwriter running a heavy metal label out of a suburban Texas recording studio, producing records for teenage boys who were about to change the genre entirely.

He didn’t try to steer them back toward country. He just helped them make the music they heard in their heads.

When Pantera signed to a major label and made Cowboys from Hell in 1990 — the record that rewrote the rules of what heavy metal was allowed to sound like — they recorded it at Pantego Sound. Jerry’s studio. Vulgar Display of Power in 1992: same studio. When Jerry later moved to Nashville and opened Abtrax Recording, Pantera followed him there. Far Beyond Driven, one of the heaviest records ever made, was cut at their father’s Nashville studio in 1994.

Think about the line that draws. Abilene. Texas honky tonks. Buck Owens. Emmylou Harris. Pantego Sound. Cowboys from Hell. Nashville. Far Beyond Driven.

One man. One bloodline. One single continuous thread.

I’ve said before — and I’ll keep saying it until people stop acting surprised — that country music and heavy metal come from the same place. Not geographically. Spiritually. Both of them are working-class music built around electric guitars and emotional extremity. Both of them carry grief in their bones. Both of them make the most sense at high volume in a room full of people who needed to be somewhere that night and couldn’t explain why.

The Abbott family is the proof of concept. Jerry’s musical DNA ran directly into his sons. The discipline, the ear, the instinct for what a song needs, the understanding that a recording studio is a sacred space where something real either happens or it doesn’t — all of that passed from a country songwriter in Abilene to two boys in Pantego to one of the most important heavy metal bands that ever lived.

That connection did not just happen in spite of country music. It happened because of it.

The story ends hard and I’m not going to drag it out. Carolyn Abbott, Jerry’s ex-wife and the mother of both boys, died of lung cancer in 1999. Dimebag Darrell was murdered onstage in Columbus, Ohio on December 8, 2004. He was thirty-eight years old. Vinnie Paul Abbott died of heart disease on June 22, 2018. He was fifty-four.

Jerry Abbott died on April 2, 2024, in Denton, Texas. He was eighty-one. He had outlived his ex-wife and both of his sons.

I don’t know how a man carries that. I don’t think there’s a way to know, really until you’ve lived it.

What I do know is that he spent his whole life giving music everything he had — writing it, recording it, producing it, funding it, building the rooms where it happened. He did it in country music. He did it in heavy metal. He did it for Buck Owens and he did it for Pantera and he did it without needing anyone outside of Texas to understand the whole picture.

The whole picture is this: country and metal are relatives. They are cousins. And Jerry Abbott is the man who can connect those dots for us.

Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel was there that day. He kept a photograph from the session on his office wall — Bob Wills in a wheelchair, surrounded by men who loved him. Years later, he would look at it and say: “That’s a man who’s about to have a stroke.”

Nobody in that room knew that yet. That’s what makes it all the more unbearable.

Let me tell you who Bob Wills was, because if you don’t already know, that’s its own kind of scandal.

He was a bandleader, a fiddler, a singer, and a songwriter whose Texas Playboys popularized western swing music in the 1930s and ‘40s. That sentence, accurate as it is, does not touch what he actually put together. Western swing was not a genre that already existed and waited for someone to play it. Bob Wills invented an entire language. He blended Texas frontier fiddle tunes, string band and hillbilly music, early jazz, big band swing, blues, and Mexican mariachi music into a swinging dance music that filled ballrooms across the Southwest and California for twenty years running. He put drums in a country band at a time when no one else would dare. He put horns in there, too. He put jazz soloists next to fiddle players and told them all to swing hard and mean it.

He built the template that Merle Haggard learned from. That Buck Owens learned from. That every California country player learned from. Well, a lot of us learned from it down the line. But, originally - he did it out of a radio station in Tulsa, Oklahoma, broadcasting live dances from Cain’s Ballroom to the entire Southwest, building a following that filled halls six nights a week for a decade straight.

Then the 1950s happened and the world just moved on.

After two heart attacks in 1965, he dissolved the Texas Playboys to perform solo with house bands. While he did well in Las Vegas and made records for the Kapp label, he was largely a forgotten character. The Country Music Hall of Fame inducted him in 1968 — the old honor that comes when an institution finally gets around to recognizing someone they should have been talking about for thirty years. The day after the ceremonies in Austin honoring him for his contributions to Texas music, Wills had the first in a series of crippling strokes. That is the kind of timing that makes you wonder what God finds funny.

A 1969 stroke left his right side paralyzed, ending his active career. He could no longer play his fiddle. He could no longer perform. The man who had filled the Aragon Ballroom in Hollywood, who had played to crowds of ten thousand in California during the war years, who had written “San Antonio Rose” and “Faded Love” and “Take Me Back to Tulsa” — he was in a Fort Worth nursing home, largely immobile, his right side just about completely gone.

He also sold his Dallas dance hall during earlier financial troubles. The buyer was a then-unknown businessman named Jack Ruby. Even his real estate had a dark footnote.

Here is where Merle Haggard comes in.

Merle Haggard worshipped Bob Wills the way some men worship God — with his whole chest, without reservation, no holding back. He had grown up in Bakersfield hearing the Texas Playboys on the radio, had seen them live, had understood at a molecular level that this was where the real came from. In 1970, while Bob Wills sat paralyzed in Fort Worth, Merle recorded an entire tribute album — A Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World — and the title was not hyperbole. It was a statement of theological fact. That album sparked a western swing revival and inspired a generation of younger players. Merle handed the torch back to the man who’d first lit it, and the fire caught.

By 1973, Wills had recovered enough to travel occasionally. After a Bob Wills Day celebration that spring in Turkey, Texas — his boyhood home — he appeared stronger than he had in years. He told his wife Betty there were three things he wanted to do before the year was out: play at a dance, go to Nashville to receive an award ASCAP wished to give him, and have one more recording session with his Texas Playboys.

When Haggard heard about the session being planned, he went to Wills’s motel room in Nashville in mid-October and asked if he could be included. Betty Wills put it simply: “Merle wanted to be a Texas Playboy for a day.”

The session was scheduled for December 3 and 4, 1973, at Sumet-Burnet Studios in Dallas, Texas. The night before, they gathered at Bob’s Fort Worth home — a jam session, a meal, a homecoming. For Jody Nix, the youngest musician in the room at twenty-one, the whole thing was already overwhelming. “We went to Bob Wills’ home for a jam session, a meal, a get-together, a rehearsal, a homecoming of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys in preparation of an album which was to make musical history,” Nix said. “And I was part of it.”

The personnel assembled for December 3rd reads like a roll call of the devoted. Johnny Gimble on fiddle, mandolin, and harmony vocals. Keith Coleman on fiddle and harmony vocals. Leon McAuliffe on steel guitar and vocals. Eldon Shamblin on guitar. Leon Rausch on bass and vocals. Al Stricklin on piano. Smokey Dacus on drums. Hoyle Nix on fiddle and vocals. Jody Nix on drums and vocals. Tommy Allsup producing. Some of these men had not recorded together since the 1930s. Some of them had been playing Wills’s music for forty years. They came from wherever they were and they came without hesitation.

Merle Haggard had a show in Chicago the night before. He played Chicago, got back on his bus, and drove through the night to Dallas just to be in that room. He arrived for day two. There are things a man does that tell you everything about who he is.. and/or who Bob Wills is to him.

Day one, December 3:

Wills was in high spirits, calling on his musicians when it came time for their solos, chiming in with his trademark “Ahhhh haaaa!” Even in the wheelchair, brought into the studio by Betty, he was alert and present and commanding. He had personally chosen the songs — “Faded Love,” “San Antonio Rose,” “Milk Cow Blues,” the standards his hands had carried for forty years. The room arranged itself in a semicircle around him the way rooms had been arranging themselves around Bob Wills since 1934.

Jody Nix stood at the vocal mic with Wills immediately to his left. “I will never forget that,” Nix said. “The vocal mic was right by him, as I stood there, he was to my immediate left, watching me the whole time. I can see those jet black eyes to this day just gleaming.”

The voice was still there. Diminished, slurred at the edges, but present — the sound of a man who built something enormous and knew it and was saying goodbye to it in a room full of people who loved him, on songs they had all played together when the world was younger and the halls were full.

That night, at his Fort Worth home, Bob Wills suffered another massive stroke.

Day two, December 4:

Merle Haggard arrived from Chicago. The man he had driven through the night to play beside was in a Fort Worth hospital, unconscious, and would never speak again.

Jody Nix recalled the change in the room: “The atmosphere changed in the studio. All the Playboys were quiet, but there was a job to do.”

And that’s exactly what they did. The old men and the honorary Playboy and the youngest drummer in the room finished the record without their king. They played “Faded Love” and “Take Me Back to Tulsa” and “San Antonio Rose” into a microphone in a Dallas studio while the man who wrote those songs lay comatose in Fort Worth. They played them as well as those songs had ever been played. Maybe better. Because they knew what they were doing and they did it anyway, which is the only definition of grace I have ever trusted.

Bob Wills unfortunately never regained consciousness. He lingered seventeen months in a nursing home in Fort Worth, never speaking, never waking fully. He died on May 13, 1975, of bronchial pneumonia. He was seventy years old.

The album was released in 1974 by United Artists while he was still alive and still silent. It sold more copies than any record he had made in his entire career. It won a Grammy Award — the highest honor ever given to a western swing recording. His record sales skyrocketed as he lay dying.

He never heard the reviews. He never knew it won.

Or maybe he did. There are things we cannot verify about the interior life of a man in a Fort Worth nursing home in 1974. What we know is that the album his musicians finished without him, in a studio where the air had changed overnight, became one of the best-selling and most decorated record of his life. The Texas Playboys played their hearts out for a man who could no longer hear them, and the world finally decided to listen.

Friends—sometimes, this is sort of what the Country Music Book of the Dead is for:

The musician who built an entire American music form, watched it outlive his body, and died in a nursing home while his last record climbed the charts and won awards he would never get the chance to hold.

It’s definitely not the worst of outcomes in life, right?

So—when you think of the making of For the Last Time by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, I want you to think of a man in his in a wheelchair, surrounded by people who loved him, smiling. He is at the center of the semicircle the way he had always been at the center.

And he damn sure used it.

Buddy Holly is a character that pops up in a request on rare occasions when I'm down on Broadway. I never know what prompts people to request him unless it's just the fact that most of the music I play is old. Last night was one of the nights that Buddy Holly got brought up. And when I think of Buddy, I think of Waylon.

There is a photograph that I keep coming back to. Two young men crammed into a photo booth, sometime in early 1959. One of them is Buddy Holly — thick-framed glasses, the grin of a man who has already figured something out that the rest of the world is just beginning to suspect. The other is Waylon Jennings, twenty-one years old, lean and unfinished, not yet the outlaw, not yet the legend, not yet anything in particular. They are laughing. You can tell by the way they lean into each other that this is the easy laughter of men who have been sitting up too late talking, men who have decided, without ever saying so, that they are going to go through life together.

Six weeks after that photograph was taken, Buddy Holly was dead in a cornfield outside of Clear Lake, Iowa. And Waylon Jennings would spend the next forty years trying to figure out why he was still alive.

This is not just the story of a plane crash. It is the story of what a single friendship does to a man — how it opens him, how it leaves marks him, and how the loss of it all becomes the wound that everything else either comes from or tries to heal.

Cotton Fields and Radio Towers

You have to understand where Waylon Jennings came from before you can understand what Buddy Holly meant to him.

He was born Wayland Arnold Jennings on June 15, 1937, in Littlefield, Texas — a town so flat and so small that the horizon was the most dramatic thing about it. His father worked as a farm laborer and a truck driver, played harmonica and guitar at family gatherings, and raised his children in the tight, unadorned faith of the Church of Christ. They were the kind of poor that doesn’t announce itself. It just is. Dirt floors. Cotton sacks. The radio on Saturday nights tuned to the Grand Ole Opry, which was as close to another world as Littlefield got.

Waylon picked up guitar at eight. He was performing on KVOW radio in Littlefield at fourteen. He left school at sixteen, which tells you everything you need to know about where his priorities were, and spent several years picking cotton and spinning records at small Texas radio stations, learning the trade of talking into a microphone, learning what a song could do to a room that was otherwise just static and darkness.

By the mid-1950s he had landed at KLLL in Lubbock — a proper radio station, a bigger city, a longer runway. He was good on the air. He had the voice for it, that broad West Texas baritone that sounded like it came up out of the ground. He played six hours a day: two hours of classic country, two hours of current country, two hours of mixed recordings that got him fired from an earlier station for daring to play Little Richard twice in a row. At KLLL, he was a little freer. And Lubbock, for all its conservatism, was at that moment becoming a strange lightning rod for something that hadn’t quite been named yet.

Buddy Holly was from Lubbock. He had grown up on the same flat streets, gone to the same kinds of churches, heard the same Grand Ole Opry broadcasts. But he had taken all of that and run it through something else — through the blues he’d heard driving the back roads, through the gospel harmonics that were already in his blood, through the rockabilly tumbling out of Memphis — and what came out the other side was something that made grown men uneasy and made teenagers lose their minds entirely.

By 1957, Holly was already a nationally known name. “That’ll Be the Day.” “Peggy Sue.” “Rave On.” He was twenty years old and he had already cracked the code. He was also from Lubbock, and when he came home, he came to KLLL.

Eyes Bugging Out of Their Heads

The way the story goes, it was Buddy’s father who first connected them — coming into the station one day with his son’s latest record, asking them to play it, mentioning that Buddy had recently taken an interest in production, in finding young artists to work with. The co-owner of KLLL, Ray Corbin, recommended Jennings.

Then one day Buddy Holly walked through the door and Waylon Jennings’s life changed.

“Buddy would come up and hang out with me when he was in town,” Waylon recalled years later. “I had known him for a long time from talent shows we’d do around Lubbock. We’d lay back in the studio and play guitars, and Buddy would tell us stories. Our eyes would bug out of our heads because he’d been all over the world. He would talk about people like the Everly Brothers, and Jerry Lee, and Elvis.”

Think about what that meant to a twenty-year-old disc jockey in Lubbock, Texas. Here was a man his own age who had been to New York, played the Ed Sullivan Show, toured England, seen the thing from the inside. And he was sitting on the floor of a radio station in the town they’d both grown up in, playing guitar and talking, treating Waylon Jennings not like a fan but like a peer. Like someone worth investing in.

Holly didn’t just talk. He took over. He bought Waylon’s new clothes. He worked on his image. He arranged a session at Norman Petty’s storied studio in Clovis, New Mexico — the same room where Holly himself had cut his early records — and on September 10, 1958, Waylon Jennings made his first recording. The song was “Jole Blon,” a traditional Cajun waltz, a song about a pretty blonde woman who leaves a man flat. Holly played guitar on the session, alongside Tommy Allsup and King Curtis on saxophone. Brunswick Records released it. It didn’t exactly set the world on fire. But that wasn’t the point. The point was that Buddy Holly had looked at an unknown radio DJ with no credentials and no connections and said: I believe in you.

“Buddy was the first guy who had confidence in me,” Waylon said. “Hell, I had as much star quality as an old shoe, but he really liked me, and believed in me.”

The three men also wrote a song together at the KLLL studio that year — Holly, Jennings, and Corbin, a song called “You’re the One,” which Holly recorded with acoustic guitar, singing lead. A love song. Domestic and tender in the way that Holly’s love songs always were, before everything else he was. It was posthumously released in 1964. By then, the man who sang it had been gone five years.

When Buddy Holly came back to Lubbock in December of 1958 — on vacation with his wife Maria Elena, expecting their first child — he stopped by KLLL again. He had a plan. He was putting together a new touring band for a Midwest run, the Winter Dance Party. The original Crickets had dissolved. He needed musicians. He burst into the studio, held out a bass guitar, and told Waylon Jennings he had two weeks to learn to play it.

Waylon had never played bass in his life. But when Buddy Holly hands you a bass guitar and gives you two weeks, you figure it out. He didn’t learn it the correct way — he never had the patience for lessons, for the technical scaffolding of the thing. Instead, he memorized every song in Buddy Holly’s catalog. He learned it from the inside out, from the songs themselves, which is maybe the only way to really learn anything about music anyway.

In January of 1959, Waylon Jennings and Buddy Holly took the train together to New York City. Waylon stayed at the apartment Holly shared with Maria Elena near Washington Square Park. He had never been to New York. He was twenty-one years old and the greatest rock and roll songwriter alive was showing him the city and introducing him to people and laying out a future that seemed, in those weeks before the tour started, as wide open as the Texas sky he’d grown up under.

Then they took another train to Chicago, met the rest of the band, and the Winter Dance Party began.

The Winter Dance Party

The tour was hell from the first mile. Twenty-four dates across the upper Midwest in the dead of winter, crammed into a bus that had no reliable heat, in temperatures that would drop to forty below on the open plains between venues. The routing made no geographic sense — the promoters had scheduled the dates without looking at a map, zigzagging the musicians back and forth across a region that in January of 1959 was experiencing one of the deadliest winters in decades.

The bus broke down in Wisconsin in the middle of the night. The musicians built fires from newspapers to stay warm until help arrived. Carl Bunch, Holly’s drummer, ended up in a hospital with frostbite on both feet and had to leave the tour. Other musicians rotated in to fill his spot on drums, night after night. The Big Bopper — J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, who had scored a novelty hit with “Chantilly Lace” and was traveling with the tour — was battling the flu. Everyone was sick, or close to it, or had been.

And every night, they played.

On February 2, 1959, they rolled into Clear Lake, Iowa. It wasn’t even originally on the schedule — the Surf Ballroom had been added as a last-minute stop by the promoter to fill an open date. The town had never been part of the plan. It was just somewhere to put a night they couldn’t afford to leave empty.

Holly had had enough of the buses. Somewhere between the broken heater and Carl Bunch’s frostbitten feet and six hundred miles between gigs, he’d made a decision. After Clear Lake, he was chartering a plane. A four-seater Beechcraft Bonanza, piloted by a twenty-one-year-old named Roger Peterson, would fly him and two bandmates ahead to Moorhead, Minnesota — a straight shot north instead of another miserable overnight bus crawl. At $36 a seat, the equivalent of around $400 today, it was expensive. But it meant laundry. It meant a real bed. It meant arriving ahead of the bus and having a few hours that weren’t the inside of that freezing, rattling machine.

He offered the seats to Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup. They both took them.

The Seat

What happened next is one of those pivots that history records with almost brutal efficiency, stripping away everything human about it until it becomes just a fact: Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane.

But there’s a man behind that fact, and that was J.P. Richardson, and he weighed over two hundred and fifty pounds and had the flu and had not slept in what felt like a geological age. He found Waylon between sets that night at the Surf Ballroom and made his case. He was sick. He couldn’t get comfortable on the bus. He needed rest. He wasn’t asking as a star pulling rank — he was asking as one miserable human being to another.

Waylon gave him the seat.

Tommy Allsup’s seat went to Ritchie Valens — but not without a fight. Valens had never flown before. He was seventeen years old, had just had the biggest hit of his life with “La Bamba,” and was terrified of small planes. Allsup was stubborn about giving up his spot. Eventually they flipped a coin. Valens won. He is reported to have said, “That’s the first time I’ve ever won anything in my life.”

Waylon found Buddy after the sets were done. Holly was leaning back against the wall in a cane-bottom chair, in the loose, comfortable posture of a man who was already thinking about the plane ride, about the hotel bed, about tomorrow being slightly more bearable than today had been. He was laughing.

“So you’re not going with us tonight on the plane, huh?” Holly said. “Well, I hope your ol’ bus freezes up. It’s forty below out there and you’re gonna get awful cold.”

Waylon grinned. “Well,” he said, “I hope your ol’ plane crashes.”

They laughed. They said goodbye. Buddy Holly walked out into the Iowa winter darkness, and Waylon Jennings watched him go.

The Cornfield

The Beechcraft Bonanza took off from Mason City Municipal Airport at 12:55 in the morning of February 3, 1959. The temperature was fifteen degrees. The winds were thirty-six miles per hour. Light snow was falling. A cold front was dropping down from western Minnesota, with a secondary front across North Dakota. The weather briefing given to pilot Roger Peterson was incomplete — the Civil Aeronautics Board would later find that the severity of the conditions had not been adequately communicated, and that Peterson, young and instrument-inexperienced, may not have fully understood what he was flying into.

The owner of the flying service watched the plane take off. He watched the taillight arc upward and then, slowly, begin to descend. He watched it disappear.

Five minutes after takeoff, Peterson failed to make expected radio contact. Five minutes after that, he still hadn’t. The wreckage was found at sunrise the next morning — in a cornfield, six miles northwest of the airport. The plane had gone in at full speed. There was no survival. Buddy Holly was twenty-two. Ritchie Valens was seventeen. The Big Bopper was twenty-eight. Roger Peterson was twenty-one.

Within minutes of the Clear Lake police announcement, people were calling to ask if they could buy Buddy Holly’s glasses.

The Weight of a Joke

The remaining musicians on the Winter Dance Party played in Moorhead, Minnesota that same day. The day of the crash. There was no pause, no acknowledgment, no permission to grieve. The promoter forced them to play. The venues tried to steal their share of the gate. Waylon Jennings stood on those stages and sang Buddy Holly’s songs, and no one gave him a single hour to sit down with what had happened.

“I was out there all alone,” he wrote, “lost and scared to death. I had no clue.”

He finished the remaining two weeks of the tour. When it was over, he went to New York, put Buddy Holly’s guitar and amplifier in a locker at Grand Central Terminal, mailed the keys to Maria Elena Holly, and took the train back to Lubbock. Buddy Holly was buried on February 7, while Waylon was still on the road — he couldn’t even attend the funeral. He returned to KLLL. He tried to work. He held the radio microphone and talked into the static. He stared at the records.

He did not perform for two years.

“God almighty, for years I thought I caused it,” he said in an interview decades later. “I was so afraid for many years that somebody was going to find out I said that. Somehow I blamed myself. Compounding that was the guilty feeling that I was still alive.”

The logic of survivor’s guilt is not reasonable. It knows that. It doesn’t care. It just asks the same question over and over, in different weather, at different hours of the night: Why would he die and not me? I hadn’t contributed anything to the world at that time compared to Buddy. Why would he die and not me?

It took him a long time to find an answer. Shooter Jennings, years later, offered one version of it: his father had to live with purpose because he survived. He had to become someone worth surviving for.

When Waylon was offered a spot in the reformed Crickets — essentially handed the chance to step into the aftermath, to continue carrying the name — he turned it down. He had no intention, in those early grief-soaked months, of ever playing again. He went home. He sat with it.

What a Man Does With a Ghost

He came back. He always was going to — that was the irony of it, that the same stubbornness that had made him leave school at sixteen, that had made him keep playing long after the polite thing would have been to give up, was exactly the stubbornness that eventually dragged him back to music. He moved to Arizona. He formed a band. He played clubs in Scottsdale and Tempe six nights a week, sometimes two shows a night, learning the full range of what he could do, building the sound from the ground up.

Bobby Bare heard him and told Chet Atkins — the same Chet Atkins who had been signing artists to RCA Victor out of Nashville. Waylon moved to Nashville in 1965. He became roommates with Johnny Cash, which he later described as being like a sitcom where he was supposed to handle the cleaning and Cash did the cooking. He worked under the Nashville Sound for a decade, making records that didn’t quite fit what Nashville wanted and that he knew it. He had some hits. He had more friction. He watched the industry try to smooth him down and he let them try for a while, because he was still the kid from Littlefield who didn’t have a lot of confidence yet, still the man who had watched his best friend walk into a blizzard and hadn’t been able to make it mean anything yet.

Then, in 1972, he started fighting back.

The outlaw country revolution that Waylon Jennings would come to embody — Honky Tonk Heroes in 1973, Dreaming My Dreams in 1975, Wanted: The Outlaws in 1976, the first country album ever certified platinum — was not a marketing concept. It was a theology. It was a man who had been told his whole life what shape to be taking the lesson that Buddy Holly had tried to teach him on the floor of that Lubbock radio station and finally, at nearly forty years old, applying it at full force.

Don’t ever let people tell you you can’t do something. Never put limits on yourself.

He named one of his sons Buddy. He wrote “Old Friend” for Holly — people talk about you after all this time / you were many things to many people / but you were a friend of mine. He carried the lesson everywhere he went. He carried the guilt too. The two were inseparable, which is maybe the only way that kind of grief ever makes sense — you have to carry both, or the weight of it crushes you.

In 1979, when a promoter organized a tribute concert at the Surf Ballroom for the twentieth anniversary of the crash, Waylon Jennings was the first person they called. He said no. He had bad memories. He didn’t want to go back to Clear Lake. Twenty years later, and the mention of that dance hall in Iowa was still enough to close him down.

He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. He was too sick to attend — diabetes had been taking him apart for years — and sent his son Shooter in his place. He died on February 13, 2002. He was sixty-four years old. Let that sink in. He was sixty-four years old. That fact depresses me even more.

What the Joke Meant

I can’t speak for the ladies, but I have been around enough male musicians to know that we talk a lot of shit all of the time. That’s all that’s said between male musicians. So, two good friends would be saying this type of stuff to each other all of the time.

But, I have thought about that last exchange more times than I can count. Two men in a doorway in Clear Lake, Iowa, at the end of a hard night on a hard tour, making the dark joke that men make when they don’t know what else to do with their emotions and instabilites on the road. Neither one of them knew it was the last time they would be able to make a joke like that. That’s the thing about last times — they almost never announce themselves.

Waylon Jennings carried that joke for forty-three years. He woke up with it. He walked out on stages with it. He cut records with it. He got clean and relapsed and got clean again, and that joke was there through all of it, that terrible friendly joke that was supposed to mean nothing and ended up meaning everything.

But here is what I keep coming back to: the joke was the last real thing they said to each other. Not a farewell speech. Not a proclamation. Two friends, laughing in a doorway. I hope your ol’ plane crashes. Said the same way you say anything to someone you expect to see next week. Said by a man who was still so young that he believed, on some level, that the people he loved were not going to die.

That belief ended in a cornfield six miles from Mason City, Iowa, at approximately one o’clock in the morning of February 3, 1959. And out of the ruin of it, over the next forty years, came some of the most honest and uncompromising country music ever recorded.

Every song Waylon Jennings made after that night was, in some way, an answer to the question he kept asking himself in the dark. Why would he die and not me?

The answer was: so you could do this. So you could go to Nashville and kick down the door. So you could refuse the Nashville Sound and take the hit and keep going. So you could stand in front of a microphone and tell the truth about what this music actually is and where it comes from and what it costs.

Buddy Holly gave Waylon Jennings two weeks to learn the bass guitar. Waylon Jennings spent the rest of his life learning what to do with the life that came after.

I insinuated to you in the last piece that I’d met Jerry Lee Lewis.

I said I was in the room as the caption of a photo of Jerry Lee and Judith Brown Lewis. Like I’d just dropped a name and moved on. But I owe you more than that — because the story of meeting Jerry doesn’t begin with Jerry. It begins with a gate, a cup of coffee, and a bedroom door that had been stabbed hundreds of times with a pocket knife.

Let me take you back.

It’s early 2022. COVID-era. The world still felt slightly wrong around the edges — quieter than it should have been, people moving through their days like they weren’t entirely sure what came next.

I was living in Brentwood, Tennessee — just south of Nashville, out in the rolling hills where farmland had slowly surrendered to subdivisions. Mansions tucked into the curves of winding roads. Beautifully landscaped lawns pressed up against pastureland that still remembered what it used to be. It was a strange place to live — caught between two worlds, not quite either one.

I was staying with the family of country music singer Jim Ed Brown. But that’s a story for another day.

My friend Kelly had been out at the Lewis Ranch in Hernando, Mississippi — just across the state line south of Memphis — helping with maintenance and upkeep on the property. She reached out one afternoon and asked if I wanted to come out on one of my days off.

The question barely needed answering.

I left early on a quiet southern winter morning with a warm cup of coffee and the kind of light that makes Tennessee look like it’s been painted on glass. The drive from Nashville to Hernando is about three and a half hours if you stay on I-40 West and cut south on 55. I remember it being one of those drives where the road does all the talking — not much traffic, not much noise. Just land and sky and the slow thaw of a January morning.

I had a lot of time to think on that drive. Too much time, maybe.

Because by the time I was cutting off the interstate and rolling through rural Hernando, the weight of where I was going had started to settle in on me. This wasn’t some tribute museum stop on a highway tour. This was Jerry Lee Lewis’s house. The Killer. The man who had sold 100 million records, married his thirteen-year-old cousin, played piano with his feet, shot his bass player, fired guns at his house, and outlived every person who ever told him he’d gone too far.

There’s a long list of people who’ve met Jerry Lee Lewis and walked away with horror stories. People who came in with good intentions and left with a story they still didn’t fully believe years later. Someone told me they were backstage at Viva Las Vegas — the rockabilly festival out in Vegas — when Duane Eddy himself introduced a young woman to Jerry. Beautiful girl, excited to meet a legend. Ten minutes later she was in the hallway sobbing, because Jerry had said something to her that nobody seemed willing to repeat out loud but everybody in the room had heard. Nobody looked surprised. That was just Jerry. He’d been doing some version of that for sixty years and saw no reason to stop.

I’d heard enough stories like that one to know better than to set any expectations going in. Jerry was going to be Jerry. That was the only thing you could count on.

I pulled off a quiet residential road and found myself face to face with a brick wall.

A long, low brick wall running the perimeter of the property. And behind a wrought iron gate at the entrance — the Lewis Ranch.

I put the car in park.

I just sat there for a moment.

I don’t know how long it was exactly, but long enough. Something about seeing that gate made the whole thing real in a way that the drive hadn’t. My mind started pulling up everything — my Dad buying a janky Jerry Lee CD from a Walmart bin, the recording quality so bad it sounded like it had been recorded inside a tin can during a thunderstorm, but my Dad singing along to every single word anyway because he knew them all. Me at sixteen or seventeen, getting deep into 50s rock and watching Great Balls of Fire for the first time — Dennis Quaid absolutely unhinged at that piano, Winona Ryder watching from the doorway. I’d based most of my initial understanding of who Jerry really was on Dennis Quaid’s performance. And I’ll tell you something — it holds up better than you’d think.

I was still sitting there with my phone out, texting Kelly that I was at the gate, when the gate made that low metallic groan and started swinging open.

I had a brief and embarrassing panic about which direction it was going to swing — toward me or away — because I hadn’t pulled far enough forward and for one second I was genuinely unsure if I was about to be gate-checked in a Rolls Royce driveway. It swung the right direction. I was fine. I should have slept more the night before.

Kelly met me at the door with a fresh cup of coffee. I stepped inside the Lewis Ranch and my brain did something strange — it just stopped for a second. Not in a bad way. In the way it does when you’ve walked into a room that has more history in it than your mind knows what to do with.

But the first thing that actually registered wasn’t history. It was the quiet.

The whole place was still. Not tranquil still — uneasy still. The kind of quiet that sits on a place that hasn’t had regular life moving through it in a while. There was a thin layer of dust on things. Cigarette discoloring on the walls and ceilings in certain spots. Kitchen grime that had just been there long enough to become part of the architecture. The house wasn’t dirty exactly — it was old in the way that only a place that’s been left largely to itself can be old. A real estate agent would have called it a gem with potential. A honest one would have told you to double the renovation budget before you thought about sleeping there.

I found out soon enough that Jerry wasn’t on the premises. It was just Kelly and the silence and everything the house had accumulated over the decades.

The house was frozen in time.

That’s the thing I’ve noticed about the homes of country and rock stars from that particular era. They renovate where they have to, update where they must — but the spirit of the place stays exactly as it was when it was built. Like the house knows what it is and refuses to be talked out of it. Jerry’s place was the purest version of that I’ve ever encountered. Everything in it was original, dated, and completely unapologetic about it.

Kelly answered my first question before I fully finished asking it — Jerry and his wife weren’t living at the Ranch at that point. They were at a condo nearby. The Ranch was being used for events and tours.

We settled in the back room, which was set up like a small, private piano bar — upholstered furniture, a fireplace, and a grand piano at the center of it all, surrounded on every wall and mantle by the accumulated evidence of one of the most extraordinary careers in the history of American music. Gold records, photographs, memorabilia going back decades. The whole room smelled like old wood, history with possibly a hint of gunpowder and illicit substances still in the air.

I had about a thousand questions but couldn’t quite figure out how to start asking them. I was too busy just being in the room. Trying to absorb it.

There was also, underneath the excitement, a thin current of something else. Something harder to name.

I knew, walking into that house, what had happened there. I’d spent a long time researching Jerry’s history for the day that I may write the last article I wrote — including the death of his fifth wife, Shawn Stephens, who passed away in this house under circumstances that were never fully explained. Whatever she was given that night, whatever happened in those rooms — the official story never sat right with the people closest to it, and it still doesn’t. I still have a lot of curiosities.

That knowledge mixed with the cold winter light coming through the windows, the general stillness of the place, and approximately three cups of coffee produced a feeling I can only describe as: a lot.

Excitement. Reverence. A little unease. All of it running at the same time.

After a while, I got up and sat down at the grand piano.

I don’t know exactly what made me do it — maybe because it felt wrong not to. You don’t sit in a room with Jerry Lee Lewis’s piano and pretend it isn’t there.

I started picking out the opening of “Another Place, Another Time.” It was written by Jerry Chestnut, and the story goes that Jerry Lee actually laughed when someone first pitched it to him — thought it was just some sad, slight honky-tonk number beneath his ambitions. He was wrong about that. He listened to it once, remembered every lyric, and recorded the thing into one of the definitive honky-tonk records of his career.

“One by one, they’re turning out the lights... I’ve been feeding that ol’ jukebox just to hold you tight.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — whatever else you want to say about Jerry Lee Lewis, his honky-tonk output should be the Webster’s definition of the genre. His rock and roll gets all the attention. The honky-tonk deserves more of it.

I played a few more notes than I probably should have and eventually set the keys loose.

Then Kelly asked if I wanted a tour of the parts of the house that tours didn’t get to see.

BELOW is a YouTube link of Mickey Gilley in the same room I was in singing to Jerry and Judith for Jerry’s 85th Birthday Celebration. Playing keys for him is Jacob Tolliver - an extremely talented guy from Ohio.

We walked through a set of double doors into a hallway that connected to a private section of the house. Kelly mentioned right away that this was where the public tours ended. I assumed that meant administrative offices — and there was one of those — but that wasn’t what she was leading me to.

At the end of the hallway, on the left side, was a door.

In front of the door was a wrought iron bar gate. Heavy, solid, unmistakably intentional.

And hanging from the bars — casually, almost decoratively — were two pairs of handcuffs.

“That’s Jerry’s room.”

I stood there for a second, looking at it.

The story Kelly told me was that Jerry’s years of amphetamine abuse had left him with crippling anxiety — bad enough that he’d had the iron gate installed in front of his own bedroom door. Not a security gate for the house. A gate for his room. So he could be behind two layers of barrier between himself and the world.

The handcuffs — I never got a straight answer on those. I didn’t push. Some things you don’t need explained. I don’t believe Kelly knew the answer to that one, anyways.

His bedroom was as original and frozen as the rest of the house. I sat down on the edge of his bed and looked around slowly, taking inventory.

The bedroom door — the actual door, not the gate — was a massive, heavy oak slab. In the middle of it, at eye level, was a peephole. Which would have been perfectly sensible if it were a front door. It was not a front door. It was the door between his bedroom and the rest of his own house. The man had installed a peephole to see who was coming down his own hallway.

The back of that door told a different story.

It had been stabbed. Hundreds of times. Hundreds of small, precise puncture marks clustered across the surface of the wood — the evidence of years of lying in bed, bored, pulling a pocket knife out and throwing it at the door.

Just to have something to do.

And then there were the bullet holes.

In the walls. In the furniture. Not hidden, not patched — just there. Like they’d become part of the décor. The home’s natural state. Evidence of a man who treated his living space the way most people treat a shooting range, and apparently saw nothing wrong with that.

I had spent years hearing the stories about Jerry Lee Lewis. The mythology. The legend. The exaggeration people always assume must be threaded through any account of a man that large.

Standing in that room, I started to understand — there was no exaggeration. If anything, people had been underselling him.

We wound back through the house and ended up at the back room again. I leaned against the bar and looked out through the sliding glass doors at the property behind the house. Jerry’s pool — shaped like a piano, because of course it was — caught the pale winter light. A small lake sat beyond it, still and quiet. The whole back of the property had a strange peacefulness to it that didn’t quite square with everything I’d just seen. Like the land itself had made peace with whatever had happened on it.

Then I looked down behind the bar I was leaning on.

Boxes of pistol ammunition. Open. Used shells scattered among the full ones.

I didn’t say anything for a second. I just looked at them. Then I looked at the sliding door to the yard. Then I looked at the shells again.

I decided I didn’t need that particular question answered either.

Not long before I left, Kelly walked me out to the carport.

And there it was — Jerry’s Rolls Royce, sitting exactly where he’d left it.

I opened the door and lowered myself into the driver’s seat. Settled in. Put my hands on the wheel without quite knowing why.

I sat there in that car, on that property, surrounded by bullet holes and knife marks and piano-shaped pools and handcuffs on iron bar gates — and I thought about what a life like that even looks like from the inside. What it costs. What it gives you. What you give it and what you get from it.

For a moment, I sat there and just thought about fame and the price of it.. you know.

I thought about Dennis Quaid throwing his hands across a piano in a movie theater when I was a teenager.

I thought about my Dad singing along to a five-dollar Walmart CD with terrible sound quality.

I thought about “One by one, they’re turning out the lights.”

You can have whatever opinion you want about Jerry Lee Lewis the man. I’m not here to clean up his record or make him palatable. But I am here to tell you that there’s something about being in the physical space where a life like that was lived — really lived, in all its ugliness and genius and excess — that changes the way you understand it. You stop thinking about him as a legend and start thinking about him as a man. A deeply strange, deeply broken, deeply extraordinary man who poured all of it into music and somehow made it sound like God was playing through him.

I briefy mentioned in the last piece that I’d met Jerry Lee Lewis.

I meant it.

But this — this trip to the Ranch, this cold January morning, this frozen-in-time house full of bullet holes and grief and genius — this is where the meeting really started. Before I ever walked into the living room to see the Killer himself staring back at me.

HONKY TONK NOIR — No. 1

There is a photograph from May 1958 that tells you everything you need to know about Jerry Lee Lewis.

He is standing on the tarmac at Heathrow Airport, just landed in England for what was supposed to be a 37-date tour — the conquering American, the man positioned to swallow rock and roll whole, the next Elvis, maybe bigger. And at his side is a girl. A small girl with a purse and a Bible and a shopping bag, blinking into the flashbulbs.

A reporter asks her who she is.

She answers honestly. She doesn’t know any better. She’s thirteen years old.

The tour collapsed after three shows. The British press called him a cradle robber, a baby snatcher. By the time the plane touched back down in the States, the radio stations had already turned the music off. Sun Records wouldn’t return his calls. The man who had been making ten thousand dollars a night was, within weeks, playing for less than a hundred.

And the girl — his wife, his cousin, the daughter of his own bass player — would spend the next six decades being introduced to strangers as Jerry Lee Lewis’s child bride.

That is one marriage. He had seven.

I. Dorothy Barton — 1952 to 1953

The first wife is practically a ghost in the record. Dorothy Barton, daughter of a preacher. Jerry Lee Lewis was sixteen years old. The marriage lasted roughly twenty months, left no children, and was dissolved quietly before anyone was paying attention.

What it established, though, was the pattern: move fast, think later, let the paperwork sort itself out. He did not believe in mourning periods. Within days of the divorce being finalized, he had already moved on to the next one.

Sixteen years old. His first marriage was over before he could legally vote.

II. Jane Mitchum — 1953 to 1957

Jane gave him children. Two sons: Ronnie Guy Lewis, and Jerry Lee Lewis Jr., who would die in 1973 at nineteen years old when his Jeep went off a road in Tennessee. The loss of a son is the kind of thing that marks a man for life. Whether it marked Lewis in any useful way is another question.

The marriage to Jane ended in 1957, and here is where the legal architecture of Jerry Lee Lewis’s conjugal life begins to get genuinely strange. Lewis claimed afterward that the marriage had never been legally valid to begin with — that some procedural irregularity in the ceremony rendered Jane’s divorce filing unnecessary. Whether that was true or merely convenient, the practical effect was the same: the paperwork wasn’t fully resolved by the time he had already taken a third wife.

Which brings us to England. And the photograph. And the girl with the Bible.

III. Myra Gale Brown — December 1957 to 1970

Let’s be exact about what this was.

Myra Gale Brown was thirteen years old. Jerry Lee Lewis was twenty-two. She was the daughter of his bassist, J.W. Brown. She was also his first cousin once removed. And at the time he married her, he had not yet finalized the divorce from wife number two.

So: underage. Family.

His handlers knew. They told him not to bring her to England. He brought her to England.

When the reporter at Heathrow asked who she was, no one had told Myra what to say. She answered the way a child answers — plainly, without strategy. She said she was his wife. And that was the end of Jerry Lee Lewis’s first career.

What gets lost in the scandal, and what Myra herself spent decades trying to correct, is that the marriage was not simply a grotesque footnote. It lasted thirteen years. It produced children, including a son, Steve Allen Lewis, who drowned in the family swimming pool at three years old. It was, by Myra’s own account, genuinely happy in the early years — pillow fights, laughter, a teenage girl managing a household and a touring career and the finances because her husband was constitutionally incapable of managing anything himself.

“I was called the child bride,” she said years later. “But I was the adult and Jerry was the child. I did all the work and made all the decisions and did all the running and taking care of business.”

Then the drugs arrived, and everything that had been reckless became mean. She hired a private detective to document his infidelities. She divorced him in 1970. She later married the detective.

She published her memoir in 2016. She called it The Spark That Survived. She is still living.

Lewis, to my knowledge, never fully reckoned with any of it.

IV. Jaren Elizabeth Gunn Pate — 1971 to 1982

By the time Jaren entered the picture, Lewis was thirty-six years old and the pattern was fully established. He married her within the year of divorcing Myra. She was already pregnant. They lived together for approximately the first month of the marriage and never again.

The decade that followed was a sustained legal war. Separations, reconciliations, divorce filings, withdrawals, counter-suits. By 1979, Jaren was alleging in court that Lewis had subjected her to adultery, cruelty, and prolific abuse of alcohol and drugs. A divorce settlement was being negotiated — one that, by all accounts, would have financially destroyed him.

In 1982, before the settlement was finalized, Jaren Elizabeth Gunn Pate drowned in a friend’s swimming pool. No one witnessed it.

The divorce that would have bankrupted Jerry Lee Lewis died with her.

Lewis moved on within the year.

V. Shawn Stephens — June 7, 1983 to August 1983

Seventy-seven days.

Shawn Stephens was a twenty-five-year-old cocktail waitress from Michigan when she met Lewis through a mutual connection. She was described by everyone who knew her as warm, social, full of life. She had dreamed of marrying her boyfriend, but his family didn’t approve. Then a rock and roll legend started calling.

She told her friends she was going to go for it. She packed her things and flew to Mississippi to marry Jerry Lee Lewis.

On the wedding day, her father arrived at the house at eleven in the morning and sat outside the locked doors for over an hour before Shawn could come let him in. Jerry Lee appeared eventually — intoxicated, pounding his fist on the kitchen counter, screaming at guests. Her father stood in the hallway demanding to know what kind of operation this was. Lewis disappeared again.

On the wedding night, they couldn’t reach him.

Seventy-seven days later, on a morning in August, the housekeeper walked into the guest bedroom and found Shawn’s body in the bed, turned toward the wall, the covers drawn up to her chin. The wrist was cold. No pulse.

Lewis was in the master bedroom, behind a door fitted with iron bars. His personal physician was with him — Dr. George Nichopoulos, better known as Dr. Nick, the same man who had spent years writing narcotic prescriptions for Elvis Presley and whose medical license had been suspended for overprescribing. On Lewis’s wedding day, Shawn’s mother had found Dr. Nick sitting with Lewis in the bedroom, three pairs of pills laid out neatly on the nightstand. Two of each. Three different colors.

The preliminary cause of death was ruled pulmonary edema from a methadone overdose. Investigators said there was no evidence of foul play.

Then the journalists arrived.

A Rolling Stone investigation by Richard Ben Cramer documented what the official report had not fully accounted for: bruises on Shawn’s body. Blood under her fingernails. Scratches on Lewis’s hands. The fact that Lewis had admitted to fighting with Shawn the night she died. The fact that he had paid for a private autopsy. The fact that Shawn’s mother said her daughter didn’t use drugs — and that Shawn had told her family she was leaving Lewis just days before her death.

Shawn’s mother, at the funeral, looked at Jerry Lee Lewis and said: “He looked like he was going dancing.” She didn’t speak to him.

A grand jury convened and declined to indict. The Department of Justice reviewed the case and closed their file. Many of the county records were later destroyed in a flood.

The case has never been reopened. It has never been fully explained.

Lewis was thirty years older than Shawn Stephens. She was twenty-five when she died, three months after marrying him. His fourth wife had drowned in a swimming pool. His fifth wife died in a bed.

He has been called The Killer his entire career. He always said it was just a nickname.

VI. Kerrie McCarver — April 1984 to 2005

The sixth marriage was the longest — twenty-one years. Kerrie McCarver gave him a son, Jerry Lee Lewis III, born in 1987. In 1993, Lewis moved the family to Ireland, in what was widely understood — and officially denied — to be a tax exile. He lived in a rented house in Foxrock, Dublin. He returned to the States in 1997 when his tax situation had been resolved.

The marriage ended in 2005. Both parties accused the other of infidelity.

By the standards of what had come before, it was almost quiet.

VII. Judith Brown — March 9, 2012 to his death, October 28, 2022

Fun Fact: I was in the room when this photo was taken.

The seventh wife requires one more turn of the family screw.

Judith Brown had been married to Lewis’s cousin, Rusty Brown. Rusty Brown’s older sister was Myra Gale Brown — wife number three. The thirteen-year-old girl on the tarmac at Heathrow. Lewis married the ex-wife of his child bride’s brother.

By the time they married, Judith was sixty-two and had been working as his caregiver. His daughter Phoebe, who had been managing his affairs, didn’t know they were even dating until they announced the wedding. The day after the ceremony, Lewis severed Phoebe’s power of attorney.

It was, by all accounts, the most functional relationship of his life. Judith stood by him through strokes, surgeries, and the slow unwinding of a body that had spent seventy years operating at full destruction. She was at his bedside when he died.

His publicist reported that his final words to her were that he welcomed the hereafter. That he was not afraid.

Judith Brown is still living.

The Tally

Seven marriages. One ended before he could vote. One destroyed his career in the span of a single airport conversation. Two wives died before the ink was dry on the divorce paperwork — one drowned, one didn’t. One lasted twenty-one years and ended in mutual accusations. One lasted seventy-seven days and left questions that were never answered.

The official story on Shawn Stephens is overdose. The official story on Jaren Pate is accidental drowning. Both may be exactly what they appear to be. Jerry Lee Lewis was a man capable of destroying everything around him through sheer force of self — the drugs, the violence of his appetites, the absolute refusal to accommodate anyone else’s needs or limits. He didn’t necessarily need to be a murderer to be the kind of man in whose orbit people got destroyed.

But the timing, in both cases, was convenient. And convenience has a way of becoming its own kind of verdict.

The Killer. Everyone always said it was just a nickname.

Maybe it was.

The iconic Ms. Tootsie Bess, of Tootsie’s on Lower Broadway. A honky tonk queen in her own right. She has nothing to do with this article but I’d say her establishment has had a major impact on the music, as well - at this point for the good.. and maybe, the bad.

There was a bar in East Nashville — I won’t tell you which one because it doesn’t exist anymore and naming the corpse feels indecent — where on a Thursday night in 1957 you could sit in the third row with a bourbon you couldn’t afford and listen to a man with a Telecaster and a broken marriage tell you the precise shape of your own loneliness. Not approximately. Not in the neighborhood of it. Precisely. The steel guitar would cry and the fiddle would answer and something in the room would shift, the way pressure shifts before a storm, and grown men who hadn’t cried since their fathers’ funerals would stare into their glasses and feel, for four minutes, that the universe had noticed them.

That’s what they killed.

Now let’s talk about who they are.

The Body

First, understand what you’re looking at when you look at honky tonk music at its peak — roughly 1945 to 1958. You’re looking at something that had no precedent and has had no true successor. Ernest Tubb. Lefty Frizzell. Webb Pierce. Hank Williams, obviously, though Hank is almost too large to discuss in this context without the conversation collapsing into hagiography. These were not just mere entertainers in any conventional sense. They were transmitters. The music they made came from a specific section of American life — the working poor of the rural South and the displaced working poor who’d migrated to Detroit and Chicago and Cincinnati looking for factory work and found, instead, a different kind of poverty with better plumbing. Maybe I’ll tell you some personal stories about this some day. Wink.

The honky tonk was their cathedral. Not metaphorically. Literally. It was the place where the week’s accumulated grief got a formal hearing. Where infidelity and debt and dead-end jobs and the particular ache of being alive in a country that had forgotten you existed got transformed, through the alchemy of a three-chord song and a man who meant every word, into something bearable. Sometimes even beautiful.

The genius of honky tonk — and I use that word with the full theological weight it deserves — was its refusal of comfort. It did not tell you things would be fine. It told you that other people were suffering the same way you were suffering, and that this shared suffering had a name, and the name of it was Wednesday night, and the cover charge was two dollars. (No place is more lonely than Lower Broadway on a Thursday morning at 3 am)

By 1960, that cathedral was being demolished, brick by brick, with the full approval of the people who were supposed to be its custodians.

When you die at the height of your career and you are 29 years old, you always permanently stay on the top. And that’s where Hank Williams is today, still on the top. \

The Timeline

Here is how fast it happened. In 1952, Hank Williams recorded Your Cheatin’ Heart. In 1957, Patsy Cline recorded Walkin’ After Midnight — still rough-edged, still country in its bones, though the seams were already showing. By 1961, she was recording Crazy with strings and background vocals and a production so polished you could see your reflection in it.

Nine years. That’s all it took.

In 1958, Chet Atkins and Owen Bradley — both operating under the full blessing of their respective labels, RCA and Decca — began systematically replacing the sonic vocabulary of country music. Steel guitar was reduced, then eliminated. Fiddles were pushed to the margins. In their place came string sections, vocal choruses, and production values borrowed wholesale from the pop world that Nashville had spent a decade being condescended to by. The term they used for what they were building was The Nashville Sound.

What they were actually building was a product.

The Suspects

No, this isn’t a real image. It’s just my terrible sense of humor. And I recently discovered that Chet was a cousin of mine - which makes this article all the more complicated.

Chet Atkins. Let’s start here because Atkins is the most complicated figure in this story, and complication is where the truth lives. He was, by any honest accounting, one of the most gifted musicians country music ever produced — a guitarist of almost supernatural ability, a man with genuine roots in the East Tennessee tradition, a man who understood perfectly well what he was replacing. Which makes what he did either more forgivable or less, depending on your disposition.

Atkins understood that rock and roll was eating country music’s lunch. The teenagers who might have grown up listening to Lefty Frizzell were instead listening to Elvis — who was, not coincidentally, recording at RCA under Atkins’ purview. The math was not complicated: rough-edged music made by people who looked like they’d been in a fight was losing market share to rough-edged music made by people who looked like they’d been sent from central casting. The solution, as Atkins saw it, was to stop being rough-edged.

What Atkins built worked. Commercially, it worked beyond anyone’s reasonable expectations. He turned Nashville into a genuine industry, attracted major label investment, and created infrastructure that still exists. He also, in the process, decided on behalf of an entire tradition that the tradition was worth less than the revenue it could generate if sufficiently smoothed down. He made that decision quietly, competently, and with what I have no doubt was a sincere belief that he was saving country music rather than gutting it.

He was wrong. But he was wrong in the way that very intelligent men are often wrong — with complete conviction and excellent results, right up until the moment the consequences arrive.

Yeah, it ain’t real either. But it makes sense for this article. Just play along.

Owen Bradley. Where Atkins was the strategist, Bradley was the executor, and in some ways the more gifted one. His Quonset Hut studio on 16th Avenue became the laboratory where the Nashville Sound was refined into something genuinely seductive. The productions he made with Patsy Cline are, and I say this through gritted teeth, some of the most beautiful recordings in American music. I Fall to Pieces is a perfect record. Sweet Dreams is a perfect record. If you want to argue with me about this I will lose the argument and I know it.

That’s the thing about Owen Bradley that the simple version of this story can’t accommodate. He wasn’t making bad music. He was making gorgeous music that required the death of something irreplaceable as a precondition of its existence. That’s not a minor footnote. That is the entire moral weight of what happened.

The Labels. Columbia. Decca. RCA. Follow the money and you will always find it, patient and cold, waiting at the end of every artistic crime scene. The major labels were not villains in the operatic sense — they didn’t hate honky tonk, they were indifferent to it, which is worse. What they saw in the late 1950s was a genre with an expanding audience and a ceiling imposed by its own roughness. Pop crossover revenue was real and growing. The calculation was simple: sand off the edges, access the mainstream, multiply the revenue.

The artists whose careers were managed, redirected, and in several cases effectively ended by this calculus were not even a secondary consideration. Webb Pierce, one of the most successful country artists of the early 1950s, found himself commercially irrelevant within a decade — not because his audience disappeared, but because his audience was no longer the audience the labels were interested in serving. The people who needed honky tonk music the most were, it turned out, the least profitable demographic to make it for.

Radio. The demand side of the equation, and perhaps the least discussed. Program directors at mainstream country radio stations in the early 1960s were not selecting records based on artistic merit or cultural authenticity. They were selecting records based on what advertisers would tolerate running adjacent to. A Lefty Frizzell record about drinking yourself to oblivion in a roadside bar was not what a regional appliance company wanted playing before their spot. A lushly produced Eddy Arnold record was. The format shaped the content, the content shaped the culture, and the culture forgot, within a single generation, what it had been before the format existed.

In Defense of the Devil

I am not an unsophisticated man. I understand the counterargument, and I will make it myself before you have the chance.

The Nashville Sound produced great art. Not merely commercially successful art — great art. Patsy Cline’s recordings with Owen Bradley are masterworks. Don Gibson’s Oh Lonesome Me is a perfect song perfectly recorded. Ray Price’s transition-period work contains some of the most emotionally devastating vocals in the country canon. The Everly Brothers recorded in Nashville and made records that still sound like the inside of a dream.

You cannot dismiss this. Anyone who tells you the Nashville Sound was simply bad music is either being dishonest or hasn’t listened carefully enough. The tragedy of what happened between 1958 and 1965 is not that the music was bad. The tragedy is that it was sometimes beautiful, and that beauty required a sacrifice that nobody asked the congregation about.

The honky tonk tradition was not replaced by mediocrity. It was replaced by a different kind of excellence — cleaner, more controlled, more universally accessible, and fundamentally unable to do the one thing that honky tonk had always done: speak directly to the people who needed it most, in a voice that sounded like their own.

That is not a minor distinction. That is the whole thing.

Patsy Cline was without a doubt the “queen” of the Nashville sound.

What They Created By Killing It

Here is the dark irony that Nashville has never fully reckoned with. The Nashville Sound’s success created, within a decade, the precise conditions for its own rebellion.

By the late 1960s, a generation of artists and producers had grown up inside the machine and found it suffocating. Waylon Jennings. Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson. Billy Joe Shaver. These were not radicals in any political sense — they were traditionalists in the deepest sense, men who had been alive long enough to remember or imagine what country music was before it became a product, and who were angry enough about its absence to do something about it. The Outlaw Movement was not, at its core, an aesthetic rebellion. It was a grief response. It was what happens when a tradition gets killed slowly enough that the people who loved it have time to notice and to rage.

The machine that destroyed honky tonk spent the next decade being haunted by it. Every Outlaw record was, at some level, an accusation. Every raw vocal, every unpolished production, every lyric about whiskey and hard living and dying the way you lived was a direct rebuke to the men in the suits who had decided, fifteen years earlier, that this kind of honesty was bad for business.

They didn’t kill honky tonk. They drove it underground, where it got meaner, and waited for it to come back and settle accounts.

It always comes back.

The Verdict

Let me be plain with you.

What happened to honky tonk music in the late 1950s and early 1960s was not evolution. Evolution is undirected, gradual, and driven by the environment. What happened here was directed, rapid, and driven by revenue projections. It was a business decision that masqueraded as artistic progress, and the people who made it were smart enough to understand the difference and powerful enough not to care.

The tradition that was displaced — the music of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell and Webb Pierce and the ten thousand nameless players in the ten thousand nameless bars across the American South and Midwest — served a function that no other art form in American life has ever adequately replaced. It told the truth to people the rest of the culture had decided weren’t worth telling the truth to. It made grief beautiful without making it comfortable. It was honest in a way that honesty is rarely permitted to be, which is to say: completely, without apology, and without the slightest interest in whether you found it palatable.

They killed that. Deliberately, professionally, and with full knowledge of what they were doing.

The Nashville Sound didn’t profit from the death of honky tonk. The Nashville Sound was the death of honky tonk, dressed up in strings and background vocals and sold back to the audience as an upgrade.

Nashville has spent sixty years hoping you wouldn’t notice.

There are probably more than a dozen images like this in existence of the same person in the same life choice decision. Who knows? He was always trouble.

There is a particular kind of American the twentieth century produced in abundance and acknowledged almost never — the boy nobody wanted. He passed through broken homes and institutional corridors, slept in whatever bed the state assigned him, and learned to read people the way the rest of us learned to read books. David Allan Coe was one of those boys. Born in Akron, Ohio on September 6, 1939, he arrived into a world that had no particular interest in keeping him, and spent the better part of two decades proving it right.

What I want to give you here is not any idolization. Coe spent a career building his own mythology, and he was not always scrupulous about where the truth ended and the legend began. What I want to give you is the raw material beneath the leather and rhinestones — the actual texture of a life that produced one of the most honest and devastating debut albums this country ever made. Penitentiary Blues was not a concept. It was a biography piece.

Akron, Ohio. A Broken Home. Age Nine.

David Allan Coe was born to Donald Mahan Coe and Dorothy Ruth Wilson. Beyond names, the details of his family life are murky in the way that poor and fractured families tend to be in the historical record — more absence than documentation. What is known is that he was the product of a broken and unhappy home. Reports describe a stepmother unwilling to manage his conduct, resulting in his transfer to state facilities rather than home supervision.

That is the clinical version. What it means in plain language is this: when David Coe was nine years old, in 1948, someone in authority decided the problem was the child rather than the circumstances surrounding the child, and they sent him away.

His favorite singer at the time was Johnny Ace — the rhythm and blues singer from Memphis whose career ended at twenty-five when he shot himself in the head playing Russian roulette backstage at a Christmas dance in 1954. There is something in that detail worth sitting with. A nine-year-old boy from a broken home in Akron, Ohio, who loved Johnny Ace. He was already listening for something the mainstream couldn’t give him.

He was sent to the Starr Commonwealth for Boys reform school — a facility in Albion, Michigan, about two hundred miles from Akron. Starr Commonwealth billed itself as a Christian-based therapeutic community for troubled youth. What it was in practice, for a child who’d done nothing more serious than become inconvenient to the adults around him, was a cage with better public relations.

Johnny Ace’s “Pledging My Love” was always a favorite of mine. DAC made a record on that one, too.

The Reform School Circuit

Here is what a childhood spent in institutional care looked like in mid-century America, and why it mattered for the music that eventually came out of it.

You did not go to one place and stay. You cycled. Every time he was released, he managed to do something to get incarcerated again. Sometimes that something was a genuine infraction. Sometimes it was the predictable behavior of a child who had been given no stable foundation and was simply being what the system had made him. The distinction rarely mattered to the courts.

Coe spent much of his pre-adult years cycling through detention homes and reformatories, often due to escapes and further infractions such as car theft committed with older peers. By age fifteen, in 1955, he was at the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster, Ohio. It was there — in a prison yard in front of a captive audience — that he first sang with a guitar and five other boys. He would later recall that moment standing in front of another inmate audience decades later, rhinestone suit and all: “It started when I was 15 years old, at the Boys’ Industrial School in Ohio, and I started singing with just my guitar and five of my friends.”

The guitar came first. The songs came from whatever was already living inside him. And what was living inside him was the blues.

This is not incidental. Coe was imprisoned with, by his own accounting, around 87% Black inmates. The white inmates called him names I would never repeat because he hung around Black men and absorbed their music. He did not arrive at the blues through record shops or college radio. He absorbed it through proximity, through the same walls, through nights in cells where music was the only thing that wasn’t owned by the institution.

What the Ohio Penitentiary Costs a Man

By the time David Allan Coe entered adult incarceration, the charges had escalated from the vague catch-all of troubled youth into specifics: possession of burglary tools, auto theft, armed robbery. He was imprisoned from 1963 to 1967 on charges of possession of burglary tools — an offense that stemmed from authorities finding a screwdriver in his glove compartment.

Read that again. A screwdriver.

He served time at the Ohio State Penitentiary and Marion Correctional Institution. The Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus was, by any accounting, one of the most brutal facilities in the American corrections system — overcrowded, violent, the site of riots, fires, and a culture of predation that the state did nothing to slow. Coe was a young white man who didn’t act like a young white man was supposed to act in that environment. He crossed racial lines in a place where racial lines were enforced by violence. He spent years inside walls that were designed not to rehabilitate but to punish, and in those walls, between surviving and waiting, he wrote songs.

Now, here is where the mythology enters — and we have to deal with it honestly, because Coe himself was not always honest about it.

Coe later claimed that he was on death row for killing a man in prison. Prison officials stated there was no evidence to support it. Most who studied him concluded it was embellishment. He also claimed to have taught Charles Manson guitar. When David was in Starr Commonwealth in Albion, Michigan, Manson was at Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute, Indiana — and the man who actually taught Manson guitar appears to have been career criminal Alvin Karpis.

Coe was, as Waylon Jennings’ drummer Richie Albright once put it, “a great, great songwriter” who “could not tell the truth if it was better than a lie he’d made up.”

I do not think this diminishes him. I think it tells us something essential about the particular American archetype he inhabited and eventually perfected. The outlaw does not merely live a hard life — he performs a hard life, shapes it into narrative, makes himself the protagonist of a story large enough to contain what actually happened to him. The truth of David Allan Coe’s childhood and adolescence was, in fact, bad enough. He didn’t need to embellish it. But the embellishments tell us where the wounds were.

The Man in the Next Cell

What is substantiated — and what matters most to this story — is what happened inside those walls between a white boy from Akron with a ruined childhood and one of the most singular figures in the history of rhythm and blues.

In the cell next to David Allan Coe, during his time at the Ohio Penitentiary, was Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.

Jalacy Hawkins — Screamin’ Jay — was the man who in 1956 recorded “I Put a Spell on You,” one of the most ferocious and unsettling performances in the American musical canon. A classically trained baritone, a former professional boxer, and a showman who performed rising from coffins and wielding a skull on a stick named Henry. He was, in short, a man who understood that performance was transformation, that what you put on stage was something more than what you were in the world. That the mask was not a deception but a revelation.

Coe has said Hawkins was in the cell next to him, and that it was Hawkins who encouraged him to write the songs that would eventually become Penitentiary Blues. “I was one of about fifteen white boys,” Coe recalled, “and that word didn’t mean nothin’. I used to have to fight my way outta everywhere because I hung around black guys.”

Two men in adjacent cells. One of them had already bent American music into a new shape. The other had nothing yet but a talent and a wound. The conversation through the wall between them is lost to history, and I would give a great deal to have it back.

What we know is what came out the other side.

Nashville, 1967. A Hearse and a Dream.

On November 2, 1967, David Allan Coe was released from the Ohio State Reformatory at Marion. He arrived in Nashville the following day.

He came with almost nothing. He lived in a red Cadillac hearse, emblazoned with his name and the words “SUPPORT THE GRAND OLE’ OP’RY.” On weekends, he parked it in front of the Ryman Auditorium and played on top of it for the audiences heading inside.

Think about what that image contains. A man who has spent most of his life inside walls, standing on a hearse — a vehicle built to carry the dead — outside the cathedral of the music he intended to conquer. It was theater. It was desperation. It was the act of a man who understood instinctively that in Nashville, as in prison, if you don’t announce yourself, nobody sees you at all.

The Nashville he arrived in was dominated by the countrypolitan sound — Jim Reeves smoothness, lush strings, music designed to sand down every rough edge until it could slide across a radio dial without catching on anything. David Allan Coe was nothing but rough edges. He had spent twenty years acquiring them.

After his release, he hit the road with B.B. King and the Staples Singers. The blues community recognized what Nashville hadn’t yet decided to see. And it was B.B. King himself who eventually redirected him — telling Coe, with the plain honesty of a man who knew the industry, “You’re a great blues singer, but, man, you gonna starve to death. Nobody wants to hear a white boy sing the blues.”

Coe listened. He did not abandon the blues — he never could, and the music he made from that point forward proves it. But he turned the lens toward country, which had always been, at its root, the same music with different clothes on.

Shelby Singleton and the First Record

Coe’s early music was strongly influenced by blues and R&B — he often cited Hank Ballard as one of his favorite vocalists. When he landed his first record deal, with Shelby Singleton’s SSS Records, he cut a tough blues-based effort based on his experiences behind bars.

Shelby Singleton was one of the more interesting characters operating in the margins of the music industry in the late 1960s — a man who ran Plantation Records and SSS International out of Nashville, signing artists the major labels wouldn’t touch and putting out music the mainstream wasn’t ready for. He heard Coe busking outside the Ryman and recognized something raw enough to be real.

The album they made together was called Penitentiary Blues.

It focused on themes such as working for the first time, blood tests from veins used to inject heroin, prison time, hoodoo imagery, and death. Its influences included Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Tony Joe White. It contained tracks called “Cell #33” and “Death Row.” It was, as AllMusic’s Thom Jurek later described it, “a rowdy, funky, and crude blues record full of out-of-tune guitars, slippery performances, and an attitude of ‘fuck it, let’s get it done and get it out.’”

In Europe, it won Coe blues artist of the year. In Nashville, it was largely overlooked.

This is how it works. The place you came from understands you before the place you’re going does. The blues world heard Penitentiary Blues and recognized a man telling the truth. Nashville heard a record that didn’t fit the format and filed it under difficult.

What the Album Was, Actually

I want to be precise about what Penitentiary Blues represents in the arc of American music, because it is not simply a historical curiosity.

It is the sound of a man who learned to sing in prison, singing about prison, recorded in Nashville by a label that expected little and released into a world that wasn’t ready. It is a document. Not a document manufactured after the fact, not a retrospective mythology shaped by later success, but a thing made in direct contact with the experience it describes. The blood tests from heroin veins. The cell number. The death row imagery — embellished or not, the fear it encoded was real.

Allmusic wrote of it: “There are hints and traces of the lyrical genius Coe would display later.” That is accurate as far as it goes, but it undersells what’s already present. The genius in Penitentiary Blues is not latent. It is raw — which is a different thing entirely. Latent means waiting to develop. Raw means already real, not yet refined. The refinement came later, and it made Coe famous. But the truth was always in the raw version.

The gold mine. This album is pretty legit. I am not gonna lie — it’s a pretty bluesy masterpiece.

The Shape of a Wound

I’ve spent some time now in this archive thinking about what it means that David Allan Coe — a man who went to a reform school at nine, who spent his adolescence inside institutions, who absorbed the blues from Black men in Ohio prison cells — became the songwriter who gave Johnny Paycheck “Take This Job and Shove It” and Tanya Tucker “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone).”

The answer is that the wound was always the material.

The boy nobody wanted grew into the songwriter who understood, better than almost anyone working in Nashville in the 1970s, what it felt like to be at the end of your rope, to be invisible to the people who were supposed to see you, to be one bad break away from permanent ruin. He wrote from that place because he had lived in it for twenty years before anyone gave him a microphone.

His daughter Tanya Montana Coe, reflecting on his death in April 2026, said something that has stayed with me: “He had an extremely traumatic childhood and early adult life, and I am so proud of what he made of himself as an artist. All we kids ever really wanted was for him to feel free in his soul.”

He never fully did. You can hear it in the music, which is why the music has lasted.

The institutions got his body for twenty years. They did not get what was inside him. That survived, found its way to Nashville on top of a hearse, and eventually became Penitentiary Blues — an album that told the truth about America in 1969 with such directness and such rawness that the country barely knew what to do with it.

Some truths are like that. They arrive before their time, get filed away, and wait for the world to catch up.

No matter what they say.. this is what country music looks like.

Dangerous Don Rich. The legend. The King of Bakersfield, California Cool.

Pull up any footage of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos in their prime — the Ranch Show clips, the Carnegie Hall recording, the early Hee Haw reels — and look at the stage. Do not look at Buck. Not yet. Look to his right. There is a young man standing there in a matching Nudie suit, champagne sparkle Telecaster slung low, face split by a grin that looks like it was put on this earth specifically to make other people feel glad to be alive. That is Don Rich. That is the other half of everything you are hearing.

Most people never learned his name. That is one of the great injustices in the history of this music.

I want to correct the record today.

Washington State, 1957

Donald Eugene Ulrich was born in Olympia, Washington in 1941 — the adopted son of a family who started him on fiddle when he was barely old enough to hold one. His parents entered him in talent contests from childhood, and he was appearing on local radio broadcasts by age five. By the time he was a teenager, he was playing Steve’s Restaurant in South Tacoma for tips and instinct. In September 1957, at age sixteen, he opened for Elvis Presley at the Tacoma Lincoln Bowl. Sixteen years old. Opening for Elvis. Most musicians never get within fifty feet of a moment like that. Don Rich had it before he had a driver’s license.

Now understand what was happening in Tacoma at that same moment. A transplanted Texan named Alvis Edgar Owens Jr. — who went by Buck — was working at radio station KAYE, trying to build something, trying to figure out what he had and how to aim it. Buck Owens attended one of Rich’s shows and immediately went to speak with him. Rich was soon playing fiddle with Owens at local venues, and they were featured on the weekly BAR-K Jamboree on KTNT-TV, where Loretta Lynn made her television debut as a guest.

Think about that room for a second. Buck Owens and Don Rich, finding each other in a television studio in Tacoma, Washington. Loretta Lynn across the stage from them. 1957. Nobody in that building knew yet what any of it meant.

Buck knew enough to know that Don Rich was something he could not afford to lose.

The Freight Train

When Buck’s record “Under Your Spell Again” cracked the charts, Capitol Records pulled him back to Bakersfield to record more. He went. Don Rich chose college instead — for about a year. After a year of college, Rich dropped out and joined Owens in Bakersfield in December 1960, signing on for $75 a week. The first single he played on, “Above and Beyond,” peaked at number three.

Seventy-five dollars a week. That was the price of the partnership that changed American music.

In those early days, Owens and Rich toured haphazardly — throwing Buck’s acoustic guitar and Don’s fiddle into the back of an old Ford pickup, hopping from bar to bar, dance hall to dance hall, playing with whatever musicians they could find. This is the image I want you to hold. Not the Carnegie Hall stage, not the matching suits, not the Fender endorsements. Two men in a pickup truck, driving the California dust, working out something they didn’t have a name for yet.

The sound came together in 1962. The shuffle on the snare drum became a tightly closed high-hat. The offbeat was accented by a quick half-rimshot on the snare. Don compared the result to a “runaway locomotive.” Buck called it a “freight train.” The world came to call it the Bakersfield Sound.

And then came “Act Naturally” in 1963. Buck was initially unimpressed with the Johnny Russell song, but Rich liked it, and they recorded it with the Buckaroos on February 12, 1963. It entered the charts in April and spent four non-consecutive weeks at number one — Buck’s first number-one hit. Don Rich heard a hit that Buck couldn’t hear yet, and went and got it for him. That is how it worked between them, more times than the history books know.

Between 1963 and the early 1970s, the partnership was essentially unstoppable — twenty-one number-one hits. They were so dominant that every other act in country music was simply trying to find space between Buck Owens singles. They were so big that The Beatles covered them. The biggest band in the world was sitting in London listening to a couple of guys from Bakersfield.

Two peas in a pod. Buck and Don. Immortal friendship surpassing the grave, I’m sure.

What Don Rich Actually Was

I need to stop here, because the history has done Don Rich a disservice that still grates on me.

He is written about as a sideman. He is described as Buck’s guitarist. He gets footnoted. He gets parenthesized. This is wrong. This is profoundly, historically wrong.

Don Rich was the most important side player in the history of country music. Country music would sound significantly different without him. As bandleader, co-writer, lead guitarist, and the other voice in every harmony Buck ever sang — Don Rich was not a supporting character. He was a co-author. Of the sound, of the records, of the entire Bakersfield mythology.

People call the vocal blend between them “blood harmony,” a term usually reserved for brothers like the Louvins or the Everlys. Buck and Don weren’t related, but their voices locked in a way that defied logic. Don had a high, lonesome tenor that shadowed Buck’s phrasing perfectly — they didn’t even have to look at each other to know when to slide or when to cut a note short.

He was also the reason Nashville never swallowed them. Nashville was all about smooth strings and polite hollow-body jazz guitars. Buck and Don wanted grit. They wanted that treble turned all the way up until it hurt a little. Those champagne sparkle Telecasters weren’t just an aesthetic choice. They were a declaration of war against polish and propriety.

Buck insisted that Don was as much a part of the Buck Owens sound as Buck himself. He considered Don to be a brother, and in some ways, a son.

That line. Sit with that line. A brother and a son at the same time. That is a complicated and enormous love. That is not a professional relationship. That is someone who became family in the way that only music can make happen — through shared sweat and shared belief and thousands of miles of shared road.

The World They Built

By 1965, the machine was running at full power. Fender gave Buck a golden sparkle Telecaster and Don a champagne sparkle Fender Telecaster of his own. They scored hits with “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail,” “Before You Go” — co-written by Rich — and “Buckaroo,” the only instrumental ever to reach number one on the country charts.

Then came Carnegie Hall, March 1966. Buck had almost not booked it — he wasn’t sure New York City wanted real country music. It sold out two weeks in advance. The Carnegie Hall Concert album is widely regarded as one of the best live albums ever made in any genre. The band was so tight that they did not have to go back in to recut anything.

They went to Japan that year. They played the White House for Lyndon Johnson. They recorded in London. They went everywhere that mattered, and they dominated everywhere they went. And Don Rich was standing to Buck’s right at every single stop.

In 1969, Buck signed on to Hee Haw, with Don Rich named as the show’s musical director. The show ran on CBS until 1971, then went into syndication and stayed there for another two decades. Buck Owens became a household name. A national face. The grinning man in the overalls.

This is where something important began to quietly corrode.

Hee Haw made Buck famous in a way that the music alone never quite had. And it cost him something. It began to flatten him. The comedian started to eclipse the artist. The corny sketches started to overshadow the freight train sound. From Hee Haw‘s debut, there was a noticeable drop in the quality of his records, although he still made gems. They were still working. Don was still there. But the edge was softening in the public’s perception, even as the music itself was starting to find its way back.

In 1972, after three years without a number-one single, Buck and the Buckaroos finally hit the top again with “Made in Japan.” They were turning back toward the old sound. The freight train was getting its fire stoked again.

And then July 17, 1974 arrived.

The Night the Music Died — and Nobody Wrote a Song About It

On July 17, 1974, Don finished work at Buck’s Bakersfield studio and left on his motorcycle to meet his family for a vacation in Morro Bay, California. Earlier that day, Buck had suggested that Don not take his bike — drive a car instead. It was something Buck had pleaded with him about for years, this motorcycle riding, something that worried him deeply. Don shrugged it off. He said goodbye to his friend.

That was the last time Buck Owens saw Don Rich alive.

For unknown reasons, Rich’s motorcycle hit a center divider on northbound Highway 1 at Yerba Buena Street in Morro Bay. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo at 10:55 pm, fifty minutes after the incident was reported.

Nobody knows exactly what happened. There were no skid marks at the crash scene and no mechanical issues initially found with the motorcycle. But years later, the truth came out in the most heartbreaking way possible. One of Don’s sons — who found the blog posts and the fan pages decades after the fact and left a comment that most people missed — revealed that a neighbor who had gone to retrieve the motorcycle discovered that the front wheel of Don’s Harley-Davidson chopper had split apart. A mechanical failure, invisible until someone looked closely. Don Rich did not fall asleep at the wheel. He was not reckless. His wheel broke apart beneath him at speed on the Pacific Coast Highway, and there was nothing in the world he could have done about it.

He was thirty-two years old.

At the time of Rich’s death, he was the only original member still with the Buckaroos. His death marked the end of the Buckaroos’ reign as the top country music band.

It marked more than that. It ended Buck Owens.

Not immediately. Not visibly. But it ended him. It might as well have just been the whole band on that one motorcycle.

The Long Silence

According to Owens’ son Buddy Alan, the accidental 1974 death of Don Rich devastated Buck for years and impaired his creative efforts until his comeback in the late 1980s.

Rich’s death sent Buck first into shock, then an extended depression. He kept going through the motions. He kept filming Hee Haw. He kept releasing records. But something had gone out of the man that he could not locate anymore, and he knew it, and it seems that somewhere in his chest he stopped looking for it.

In a late 1990s interview, Owens said: “He was like a brother, a son, and a best friend. Something I never said before — maybe I couldn’t — but I think my music life ended when he died.”

My music life ended when he died.

He said that twenty-five years after the fact. Twenty-five years of carrying it before he could say it out loud. That is not grief. That is a wound that never scabbed over. That is a man who woke up every morning for a quarter-century and reached for something that was no longer there.

The records he made in the years after Don’s death have a quality to them that I can only describe as hollowness. The freight train had the same parts, played by capable men, but it didn’t move the same way. There was no one standing to Buck’s right who could fill that particular silence. Nobody else could harmonize with him the way Don had. Nobody else could look at a song Buck didn’t believe in and see what it was capable of becoming.

I have always loved he relationship between Dwight and Buck. It seemed like Dwight pulled Buck out of the Don Rich slump that plagued him for decades.

The Kid from Kentucky

In 1987, Dwight Yoakam swung by Buck’s office building in Bakersfield, unannounced. He was in town to play the county fair and came to ask if Buck might come out and sing some songs with him that night.

Yoakam had been talking about Buck Owens in every interview he gave since his first record. He wasn’t hiding the influence. He was wearing it like a coat. Buck had been watching from his Bakersfield remove, half-retired, tending to his business interests, and the energy coming off this young man from Kentucky who had been rejected by Nashville and gone and lit up the Los Angeles punk circuit with a Telecaster and a Bakersfield heart — it stirred something.

The two recorded “Streets of Bakersfield,” which gave Owens his first number-one hit in sixteen years and Yoakam his first number one ever.

Sixteen years. The gap between those two number-one hits is exactly the length of the wound.

Buck came back. Not all the way — you can’t come back all the way from what he lost. But enough. Enough to remember who he was. Enough to stand on a stage again and mean it.

In the early 1990s, Buck Owens built the Crystal Palace, a music venue in Bakersfield — a classy place with a tall stage, good food, and a museum of Buck Owens and Buckaroos memorabilia. He played there weekly into his seventies. He made it his monument. He surrounded himself with the artifacts of what he and Don had built together, and he played the songs in their honor every week until his body wouldn’t let him anymore.

Owens recovered from oral cancer in the early 1990s but had additional health problems near the end of the 1990s and into the 2000s, including pneumonia and a minor stroke in 2004. He kept playing when he could. He kept showing up.

On March 25, 2006, Buck Owens performed at the Crystal Palace. He went home afterward and died in his sleep of a heart attack at the age of seventy-six. Dwight Yoakam sang at his funeral.

What Was Lost and What Remains

Don Rich really is a classic case of a legacy gone scandalously unheralded — he was primarily a sideman, had a selfless approach to his own career, was willing to cede the spotlight to Buck, and died so early in life. He never campaigned for himself. He never made a solo album that got released in his lifetime. He recorded a whole record of George Jones covers that sat in a vault for nearly forty years. He was content — genuinely, not performatively content — to stand to Buck’s right and make the music as good as it could possibly be.

There is something almost unbearable about that level of selflessness in hindsight.

There is a petition that circulates from time to time asking the Country Music Hall of Fame to induct Don Rich. As of this writing, he is not in it. The man whose harmony put Buck Owens in the Hall of Fame. The man whose Telecaster defined the Bakersfield Sound. The man without whom the Beatles might never have covered an American country song. Not in the Hall of Fame.

Someone once framed it this way: it’s as if we recognized only one of the Everly Brothers.

That is exactly what it is. That is precisely what it is.

I want to tell you something about grief, because I believe this story is ultimately about grief — Buck’s grief, specifically, and what it does to a man when the music he makes requires someone else’s soul to complete it.

Buck Owens did not fall apart after Don Rich died. He did not drink himself to death or disappear into the dark. He got up. He went to work. He filmed Hee Haw on schedule. He made records. He honored his contracts. On the surface, he carried on.

But there is a difference between carrying on and being whole. Buck Owens spent twelve years carrying on before Dwight Yoakam showed up and reminded him there was still a reason to mean it. And even then — even with the comeback, the Crystal Palace, the late-career grace — Buck would tell you himself that his music life ended on Highway 1 in Morro Bay on a July night in 1974.

That is what it means to find the right person to make music with. That is what it costs when you lose them.

There is an obvious reason why this photo was chosen as the cover of this article - and it’s the same reason why they chose this to be Merle Kilgore’s monument at his place of rest. He was a special individual. Unique, cool, and forever memorialized as ONE-OF-A-KIND.

There’s a particular kind of country music figure who never quite becomes the headline but somehow ends up in every photograph. The guy at the edge of the frame, holding a guitar that isn’t his, laughing at something the star just said. The guy whose name shows up in the parentheses on the back of the record — (Carter–Kilgore) — and who you’d swear you’ve never heard of, even though you’ve been singing his songs since you were old enough to spin a radio dial.

Merle Kilgore was that guy. Then he kept being that guy for fifty years, until eventually being that guy made him one of the most quietly consequential figures in the history of country music.

I’ve loved Merle Kilgore’s presence in country music history for as long as I’ve been paying attention to country music history. He’s one of those figures I’ve always been fascinated by — every time he turned up in an interview, or somebody else turned up telling a story about him, I’d lean in. He seemed, by every account, like the coolest person you could possibly have around. The best demeanor. Warm, funny, loyal, unhurried. Some people just have an aura, and Merle had one.

This is the ballad of Wyatt Merle Kilgore — songwriter, sideman, Cadillac salesman of the Nashville dream, deputy sheriff of the Hank Williams legacy, and the man who turned a story about his own uncle into a number-one record about a fictional mountain in Arkansas.

A Shreveport boy with a guitar that wasn’t his

Kilgore was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1934, but the city that made him was Shreveport, Louisiana. His family moved there when he was a kid, and Shreveport in the late 1940s was about as good a place to grow up country as has ever existed in this country. KWKH was beaming the Louisiana Hayride across the South every Saturday night, the Hayride was the place a young Hank Williams went to make himself before Nashville would have him, and a teenage Merle Kilgore was right there, standing in the wings.

The story everyone tells — and Kilgore told it often, because it was true and because it was the best opening line a country songwriter could ever have — was that at fourteen years old he carried Hank Williams’ guitar. He wasn’t a roadie, exactly. He was a kid who hung around the radio station, made himself useful, and one night was handed the most important six strings in country music and told to walk them to the stage. He never really put them down again. That single moment is the seed of almost everything that follows in his life. He spent the rest of it tracing a circle back to Hank.

By the time he was sixteen he was on the Hayride himself. He recorded for small labels through the 1950s. He cut sides for Imperial and then Starday, then signed with Mercury. He was a presentable, broad-shouldered baritone — the kind of voice that could fill a honky-tonk but never quite raise the hair on the back of your neck the way Hank’s could. He had a few minor regional hits. What he had in larger supply, and what would actually pay the bills for the rest of his life, was an ear for a song.

Any country music nerd would understand why I was nerd out about this photo. Look at that GAY guitar. No, that’s the name of the Canadian guitar luthier.. Frank Gay. But look at that wild guitar. Webb Pierce, Faron Young, Carl Smith, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, Hank Snow - and a few others had instruments made by Frank Gay.

The hits he wrote for other people

In 1958, a young Johnny Horton — also a Hayride alumnus — recorded a Kilgore song called “Johnny Reb.” It was the kind of Civil War narrative ballad that Horton was specializing in around then, and it became a top-ten country hit and a top-twenty pop hit. Kilgore had landed his first big one as a writer.

Two years later, Webb Pierce took Kilgore’s “More and More” up the country charts. It was the second proof that the kid from Shreveport could write for other people’s voices as well as his own. By 1960 he had decided, the way smart songwriters always decide eventually, that the bigger paycheck was on the back of the album, not the front.

Then came the mountain.

Wolverton Mountain (and the uncle who actually lived there)

In 1962, Kilgore’s cousin Claude King — a fellow Shreveport country singer — recorded a song called “Wolverton Mountain” that Kilgore had written with his frequent collaborator Claude King himself. It went to number one on the country charts, stayed there for nine straight weeks, and crossed over into the pop top ten. It was the biggest country record of the year. It made Claude King a star and made Merle Kilgore a name that publishers in Nashville started taking calls from.

The song was about a man warned not to go up Wolverton Mountain to court the daughter of Clifton Clowers, who would shoot any boy who dared. The arrows of the song are pretty squarely aimed at folk-ballad territory — there’s a frontier echo to it, a Davy Crockett warning. But here is the wonderful, very Merle Kilgore part: Clifton Clowers was real. He was Kilgore’s uncle, an actual man who lived on an actual mountain in Conway County, Arkansas. Wolverton Mountain itself isn’t a real geographic feature, but Woolverton Mountain is — Kilgore just changed a letter — and Uncle Clifton was up there, ornery and protective of his daughter, exactly as advertised.

This will turn out to be a Merle Kilgore signature: take something real, give it just enough lift to become a tall tale, and let everyone argue afterward over which parts were true. He once said his uncle, by then in his eighties, started getting fan mail.

Ring of Fire

If “Wolverton Mountain” was the hit that paid the rent, the song that paid for the house — and the house his children grew up in, and probably some of the houses after that — was “Ring of Fire.”

The story, in the version Kilgore liked to tell, was that he was on the road in 1962 with June Carter, who was at the time tangled up in the messy, painful, not-yet-public middle of falling in love with Johnny Cash. Cash was still married to someone else, was deep in pills, was the kind of love affair that scares the people around it. June was working through what she was feeling, the way songwriters do, by trying to put it into words. She and Kilgore were in a car, or a hotel room, or a backstage hallway — the version shifts depending on the year you got it — and “Ring of Fire” came out of that conversation. June’s image of love as a burning, consuming, falling-down thing; Kilgore’s craftsman’s instinct for the line that locks the verse into place.

The song was first recorded by June’s sister Anita Carter in 1962 as “(Love’s) Ring of Fire” and didn’t move much. Cash heard it, said he had a dream about it with mariachi horns, and recorded his now-iconic version in March of 1963. It hit number one country, top twenty pop, became the best-selling single of his career to that point, and is, by any reasonable measure, one of the half dozen most famous country songs ever written.

The credit on the label, then and now: Merle Kilgore and June Carter.

There has been, over the decades, an occasional revisionist whisper that Cash himself wrote more of the song than the credit suggests, or that June wrote it alone about him. Kilgore would politely roll his eyes at that. June Carter Cash, who was alive long enough to be asked directly many times, was unwavering: she and Merle wrote it. He was her co-writer; he was also one of her closest road friends, going back to the Hayride days. Nobody who knew the two of them doubted it.

That song alone would be a career. For Kilgore it was a third act.

Hollywood, briefly

Somewhere in here Kilgore figured out he had a face for movies. He was tall and warm and looked like exactly what a Hollywood casting director thought a country singer should look like. In 1966 he turned up in Nevada Smith opposite Steve McQueen. He had a small part in Five Card Stud. Later he played the part he was probably born to play: he portrayed Hank Williams Sr. in Coal Miner’s Daughter, the 1980 Loretta Lynn biopic with Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. It is a small scene. He’s onstage at the Hayride. The kid in the audience, watching him, is supposed to be the future Loretta. Kilgore — who really had stood backstage at the real Hayride and watched the real Hank Williams thirty years earlier — got to put on the white suit and become him for a few minutes. There are not a lot of jobs in country music more poetic than that one.

He also turned up in Roadie with Meat Loaf, because the seventies were like that.

Managing Bocephus

The role that ended up taking the second half of his life began, like so many things in country music, as a favor to a friend’s family. Hank Williams Jr. — Bocephus — was the son of the man whose guitar Kilgore had carried as a teenager. By the late 1970s Hank Jr. was rebuilding himself after his near-fatal fall off Ajax Mountain in Montana, trying to escape the long shadow of his father’s catalog and become his own kind of southern-rock-tinged country star. He needed somebody he trusted to run the business of being Hank Williams Jr.

He hired Merle Kilgore.

Kilgore became Hank Jr.’s manager around 1980, and he stayed in that role for the rest of his life — roughly a quarter century. He ran the business, picked the openers, fielded the phone calls, signed the contracts, and on stage he played the part of court jester and master of ceremonies. If you went to a Hank Jr. show in the eighties or nineties, the warm-faced fellow in the cowboy hat working the crowd before Hank came out, telling stories, working a riff about Wolverton Mountain or Ring of Fire — that was Merle. Hank Jr. called him Uncle Merle. So did Hank III, eventually. He was, functionally, a member of the family. The kid who’d carried Hank Sr.’s guitar ended up running Hank Jr.’s company, and watching Hank III come up after that. Three Williams generations, one Kilgore.

He also kept writing. He had a hand in some of the biggest Hank Jr. records of the era, including “Dear Joel,” and never stopped doing the thing that had gotten him to Nashville in the first place.

If you want a small taste of what he was like in that role — the on-stage Merle, the laughing-with-Hank Merle, the keeper of the family — go look up Living Proof: The Hank Williams Jr. Story, the 1983 made-for-TV biopic. It’s on YouTube right now for free. I’m not going to make any promises about whether the movie is, by some objective standard, good. Don’t ask me. I’ll just say I find it entertaining, and Merle is in there being Merle, which is the point.

Use your own judgement - but I honestly love this movie. It’s not great. But I just love it and appreciate it for what it is.

The Hall, the trophies, the long road

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted him in 1998. By then he was the rare living country songwriter who had a number-one country hit in the 1960s, a top-ten pop crossover, a song on the Cash American Recordings arc, and a steady second career managing one of country’s biggest stars. He’d been on the road, in some capacity, since Truman was president.

Kilgore died in February 2005. He was seventy years old, and he was on the road when he went — being treated in Mexico for cancer, still in the middle of working. There was no retirement gig. Hank Jr. cried openly at the funeral. The condolences came in from Cash family, from Carters, from George Jones, from people whose careers Kilgore had quietly nudged forward and people whose careers had quietly nudged his.

Why Merle Kilgore matters

The reason to write a ballad about Merle Kilgore is not that he was the best singer of his generation, because he wasn’t, and he’d be the first to tell you so. It’s that his life is a near-perfect map of country music’s twentieth-century circulatory system. He stood at the Hayride when it was a launching pad. He wrote a 1962 number-one record about his actual uncle. He co-wrote one of the most recognizable songs in American popular music with the woman who would become Mrs. Johnny Cash. He acted in a movie playing the man whose guitar he’d carried as a child. He spent the back half of his career as the trusted right hand of that same man’s son.

There’s a Forrest Gump quality to it, except Kilgore wasn’t an accident in the room. He was a country music craftsman who made himself useful, kept his word, and could write a hook. The country music industry, for all its drama, tends to remember people like that. It remembered him. And I do, too.

If you want to hear him, the obvious place to start is the Cash recording of “Ring of Fire” — but listen to it knowing the writer is the Shreveport kid with the borrowed guitar, not the man with the deep voice on the microphone. Then put on Claude King’s “Wolverton Mountain” and picture old Clifton Clowers in Conway County, Arkansas, opening yet another piece of fan mail. Then put on a late-period Hank Jr. record and listen for the man laughing in the background.

That’s Merle.

The ballad is in the credits.

And if you’ll allow me one piece of sentiment to close on: Merle Kilgore may, in the end, have been God’s little gift to the Williams family. The boy who carried Hank Sr.’s guitar grew up to look after Hank Sr.’s son, and to be there for Hank Sr.’s grandson too. That’s not a career. That’s a calling.

Merle Kilgore. A country legend in his own right. You did good!

There’s a particular kind of silence that settles inside an empty bar. Not peaceful — expectant. Like the room is still half-listening for the boot scoot, the steel guitar, the laugh of someone who left long ago.

That’s the silence Bonnie and I stood in on our last night inside Bobby Mackey’s Music World, just down Licking Pike from where Wilder bleeds into Newport, Kentucky. Outside, the deconstruction crew was packing up for the day. We were the last two people left inside who hadn’t come to take the place apart.

I think about that a lot now.

For nearly half a century, Bobby Mackey’s was a honky-tonk that wore its hauntings on its sleeve. There was a sign at the door — printed, framed, and worded like a contract — warning customers that the establishment was rumored to be haunted and that management took no responsibility for ghostly encounters. It was the only bar I’ve ever been in where the lawyer, the priest, and the steel guitarist all had equal billing.

This is the story of how it got that way.

The Slaughterhouse and the Headless Girl

Long before there was a stage — before the boots and the band and the bull — the building was something else entirely. In the late 1800s, the structure on Licking Pike housed a slaughterhouse. By some accounts, blood from the killing floor was channeled into a well in the basement — a deep, cold cylinder of stone that, depending on who you ask, was either a piece of practical drainage or a portal to somewhere considerably worse.

It is the well, more than anything else, that made Bobby Mackey’s famous.

In late January of 1896, a young woman named Pearl Bryan — the youngest of twelve children from a respected family in Greencastle, Indiana — was found dead in a field near Fort Thomas, Kentucky. Pearl was twenty-two and pregnant. Her killers, her boyfriend Scott Jackson and his roommate Alonzo Walling, had taken her across the river under the promise of an abortion that became, instead, a murder. They decapitated her. Her head was never found.

It was the kind of crime that made the front page from Cincinnati to New York. And one piece of testimony, given before Jackson and Walling went to the gallows, has clung to that stretch of Licking Pike ever since: that Pearl’s head had been thrown into the well at the slaughterhouse — the same building that would, decades later, become Bobby Mackey’s. Newspaper accounts from the period also reported that Jackson and Walling had been involved with a Satanic cult, and that on the gallows they vowed to return from beyond the grave to torment anyone who’d condemned them.

Whether you believe any of it or none of it, here is what is true: the well was real. The murder was real. The men were hanged. And from that moment forward, the ground beneath that building had a story attached to it that nobody could ever quite shake.

Bootleggers, Showgirls, and a Woman Named Johanna

The slaughterhouse closed at the turn of the century. By Prohibition, Newport had become a kind of midwestern Sin City — a thicket of speakeasies, brothels, casino rooms, and gambling halls run by men with nicknames you’d see in pulp novels. The building reopened as a roadhouse and casino, going by various names across the bootlegger and gangster decades that followed: The Primrose, The Latin Quarter, and others that came and went with the heat from the law.

It is from this era that the second great ghost of Bobby Mackey’s emerges: Johanna.

The legend goes like this. Johanna was a singer or a dancer at the casino — accounts differ — and the daughter of one of the gangsters who ran it. She fell in love with a performer named Robert. Her father did not approve. He had Robert killed. Pregnant and grieving, Johanna is said to have poisoned herself in the dressing room above the dance floor, leaving behind a song she’d written for the man she loved.

There is no firm historical record of Johanna. What there is, instead, is a song. Bobby Mackey himself recorded “Johanna” on one of his albums, and over the decades the lyrics — and the rose-scented perfume staff and patrons swore they smelled in the back of the building — became as much a part of the architecture as the bar rail. Whether she ever truly existed or not, by the time the country band started playing on the weekends, she haunted the place either way.

The Honky-Tonk Era

Bobby Mackey was a Kentucky-born country singer with a voice built for jukeboxes and a streak of stubbornness that ran straight through his career. He’d done the Nashville rounds, cut records, opened for big names, and in 1978 he bought the building on Licking Pike and turned it into Bobby Mackey’s Music World.

For the next four-plus decades, it was one of the great honky-tonks of the Ohio Valley. Mackey and his band held the stage most weekends — if you wanted to hear “Johanna” sung by the man who wrote it, you went to Wilder. The venue became a stop on the kind of regional country circuit that doesn’t show up in the glossy magazines but kept classic country alive when Nashville was busy chasing pop crossover. Bluegrass and traditional acts came through. A mechanical bull in the corner. Two-step lessons on the floor. A jukebox that knew the difference between Hank and Hank Jr.

You can argue about which of the boldfaced names of country actually played the room across the years — Mackey’s own list ran long, and the building’s mythology grew with each story. What’s not in dispute is that it was the kind of place where local kids had their first dance, where bachelor parties came to sweat, and where the steel guitar and the Pearl Bryan rumor lived under the same roof without anybody finding it strange.

That was Bobby Mackey’s signature trick: it was a real honky-tonk. The hauntings weren’t a gimmick layered on top. They were the foundation under the dance floor. People came for the music and stayed for the chill that climbed the back stairs.

The Hauntings That Made It Famous

There is a basement at Bobby Mackey’s. There are stairs that lead down to it. There is a well at the bottom of those stairs.

If you ever made it down there — and not many patrons did (we were able to)—you were looking at the thing locals had simply taken to calling the well from hell. Some said two priests had performed exorcisms on the building over the years and left convinced the well was a portal. Others said it was just a well.

The most famous figure in the haunted history of Bobby Mackey’s wasn’t a ghost — he was a custodian. Carl Lawson worked at the bar in the 1990s and lived in an apartment on the property. By his own account, and by the accounts of the priests and parapsychologists who eventually got involved, Lawson became convinced the building was tormenting him: voices, footsteps, objects moving, and ultimately what he and several clergy described as a partial possession. An exorcism was performed. Lawson left the property. He spoke about the experience for the rest of his life.

He was not the only one with a story. In the early 1990s, a pregnant woman sued Bobby Mackey personally, claiming she had been attacked by an unseen force in the basement and that the establishment had not adequately warned her of the supernatural risks. The case was eventually dismissed — but the warning sign at the entrance, the one I mentioned at the top of this piece, was reported to have appeared shortly afterward and stayed there ever since. Management is not responsible for any ghostly encounters. Read it twice. There aren’t many bars in America where you have to.

The stories that piled up over the decades were almost monotonously consistent. The smell of roses where there were no roses. A figure in the mirror of the women’s restroom that wasn’t anyone’s reflection. A cowboy at the end of the bar who was there and then wasn’t. Cold spots on the dance floor. Doors that opened on their own in the dressing room above the stage — Johanna’s dressing room, if you believe the legend. Patrons reported being scratched in the basement. Staff reported hearing their names whispered when they were alone closing the place down.

Skeptics had explanations for most of it. The building was old. The river was close. The HVAC was original. The clientele was, on any given Saturday, deeply lubricated. All of that is fair. And none of it ever quite explained the well.

Television, Tourists, and the Long Tail of Fame

By the 2000s, Bobby Mackey’s had outgrown regional legend and become one of the most visited haunted locations in the United States. The TV crews started arriving. Unsolved Mysteries did a segment. A Haunting did an episode. And then Ghost Adventures showed up — multiple times. Zak Bagans famously claimed to have been scratched on his back in a triple-six pattern in the basement, an episode that, more than any other piece of media, cemented the building’s place in the modern paranormal canon.

Suddenly the parking lot on a Wednesday looked like a parking lot on a Saturday. Ghost tours ran on weeknights. Investigators flew in from Europe. The venue managed the strange feat of being a working country bar and a working tourist attraction at the same time, and Mackey, to his credit, mostly let the legend speak for itself. He’d play his set, sing “Johanna,” sign autographs, and head home.

There were detractors. Local historians pointed out — correctly — that some of the central claims are hard to verify with primary sources. The newspaper coverage of the Pearl Bryan murder is real and chilling on its own terms, but the connection between the well in the basement and Pearl’s missing head is more folklore than forensics. Johanna may be entirely composite — a piece of country song-craft retrofitted as ghost story. Bobby Mackey himself was, in interviews, careful never to oversell. He’d shrug. He’d grin. He’d say something like, I don’t know what’s down there. But something’s down there.

That, in the end, was always the line. Something’s down there.

If those walls could talk, eh old man?

The Last Night

Which brings me back to Bonnie, and to the silence.

We had always wanted to visit Bobby Mackey’s — and we finally were rolling through town and had a chance to. When the news came that the building was finally going to be taken down, we HAD to see it. We came late in it’s life, alright — after the crowds, after the official farewells. The deconstruction crew was finishing up for the day. We were let inside.

I want to tell you the lights flickered. They didn’t. I want to tell you we smelled roses. We didn’t. The well was sealed by then, and the ground floor was already half a memory: the booths gone, the long bar with the scarred pine top still in place, the stage stripped down to its plywood bones. Bonnie walked across what once was the dance floor. I stood in the place where the band used to be and tried to hear “Johanna.” I couldn’t.

What we did feel — and I’m not going to dress this up — was the weight of every Saturday night that had ever happened in that room. First dances, last dances, fistfights, marriages started and ended, bachelor parties, bachelorette parties, country songs sung loud and badly by people who would never sing them better. A hundred and thirty years of human life stacked on top of a slaughterhouse well. Whatever you believe about ghosts, you cannot stand in a room like that and not feel the people who passed through it. They leave something. They always do.

One of the crew members took us to the basement. We saw the well. We saw the entirety of it by the flashlights of our phones. Creepy? Yeah - for sure. Exciting? You bet.

We didn’t stay long. It didn’t feel right to stay long. We walked out into the parking lot and stood there a minute with the building behind us, the river somewhere off to our left, and the long Kentucky dusk doing what Kentucky dusks do.

The next morning, the work began in earnest. The roof came off. Then the walls. Then the floor where I’d tried to hear the band. Eventually the well, I’m told, was filled and capped for good.

After

Bobby Mackey’s is gone. The sign that warned about ghostly encounters is gone with it. Whatever was actually down in that basement — Pearl, Johanna, the cult’s curse, the slaughterhouse blood, or just the smell of an old Kentucky river building with too much history under one roof — it doesn’t have a building to live in anymore.

But here’s the thing about places like that. They don’t really need a building. They need a story, and somebody to tell it.

So that’s what this is.

Bonnie and I were the last people in Bobby Mackey’s while it was still standing — aside from the crew that took it apart. I think about that a lot now. Mostly I think about how strange it is that a slaughterhouse, a casino, and a country bar all turned out to be the same room. And how in the end, the bands packed up, the lights came down, the warning sign came off the wall, and what was left was exactly what had always been there: the silence, and whatever it was the silence was waiting on.

I hope wherever it went, somebody’s still playing “Johanna.”

Zachariah Malachi — known as The Count of Country Music — is a singer, musician, actor, and writer based in Nashville, Tennessee. He writes about the American dark the way a man writes about a fire he was too close to — not as a historian, but as a survivor.

There’s a version of Hank Williams Jr.’s life that everybody knows. It’s the one with the beard, the dark sunglasses, the cowboy hat, the Monday Night Football theme, “A Country Boy Can Survive,” the rowdy friends settling down. That’s the Bocephus most people picture when they hear the name.

But that Hank Jr. — the one who finally got to be himself — didn’t really exist until after he fell off a mountain in 1975. Everything that came before was somebody else’s idea of who he was supposed to be. Mostly his mother’s. Sometimes his dead father’s. Almost never his own.

This is the story of those years. The kid years. The puppet years. The breaking-loose years. Birth to that 500-foot tumble down Ajax Mountain — the long, complicated, and frankly weird first act of one of country music’s most misunderstood figures.

A Boy Born Into a Shadow

Randall Hank Williams was born May 26, 1949, in Shreveport, Louisiana. His father — already country music’s biggest star and already coming apart at the seams — nicknamed him Bocephus after a ventriloquist dummy used by Grand Ole Opry comedian Rod Brasfield. There’s something almost too on-the-nose about that, isn’t there? A wooden dummy who only speaks when somebody else moves his mouth. The nickname stuck for life.

Hank Sr. and Audrey Mae Sheppard’s marriage was a war zone — booze, betrayal, restraining orders, and the kind of love that destroys both people involved. By the time little Randall was old enough to form a memory, his father was a ghost on a tour bus headed for a Canton, Ohio in the sky. On New Year’s Day 1953, in the back seat of that powder-blue Cadillac, Hank Sr. died at 29 of heart failure brought on by years of pills, whiskey, and an undiagnosed back condition that had him in agonizing pain since childhood.

Bocephus was three years old.

He doesn’t remember his father. Not really. He’s said as much in interviews for decades. What he remembers is the house full of his father’s records, his father’s clothes, his father’s guitars, and his father’s widow — and that widow had some plans.

I have always thought these pictures were amazing. Little Bocephus and his daddy, gone too soon.

Audrey’s Master Plan

You can’t tell this story without telling Audrey’s, because for the first twenty-some years of Hank Jr.’s life, she essentially was the story. Audrey Williams was a woman who had been told, repeatedly and humiliatingly, that she couldn’t sing. She had wanted a career in country music more than anything, and Hank Sr. had carried her along on the strength of his own genius — but the records made it clear who had the talent and who didn’t. When he died, she lost not just a husband but the only vehicle she’d ever had for her own ambitions.

So she found a new vehicle: her son.

By the time Hank Jr. was eight years old, Audrey had him on stage doing his father’s songs. Eight. He played the Grand Ole Opry at eleven, in 1960, and the audience wept openly to see Hank’s boy up there singing “Lovesick Blues” in a voice that was already, eerily, his daddy’s voice. By fourteen he had a hit record — “Long Gone Lonesome Blues,” 1964, which is one of his father’s songs, of course, because in those days he wasn’t allowed to be anything but a junior.

That same year MGM made the biopic Your Cheatin’ Heart with George Hamilton playing Hank Sr. Hank Jr. — fourteen years old — sang every song on the soundtrack. He was, in a very real and very strange sense, ghost-singing for his own dead father in a movie about his father’s life, while his mother stage-managed the whole production.

The relationship between Hank Jr. and Audrey was the central fact of his childhood, and it was poisonous in the way that controlling-mother relationships can be — the love was real, the damage was real, and he couldn’t separate the two until much later. She drank. She spent money like it was on fire. She put her grief and her thwarted ambition on his shoulders and called it inheritance. By the time he was a teenager, he was making money she was burning through, singing songs he hadn’t written, dressed in suits picked out to remind audiences of a man he’d never known.

He has said, more than once, that he loved her. He has also said that she nearly killed him. Both things are true.

Young Bocephus and his mother, Ms. Audrey (what many called her). I have great respect for her, personally - regardless of what many people feel about Audrey Williams. I couldn’t imagine a Hank story without Ms. Audrey.

The Older Brothers He Picked Up Along the Way

Here’s the thing that saved him, I think: the country music world in the 1960s was small, and the men who had known and loved his father took an interest in the boy. Not in the puppet — in the boy.

Johnny Cash would come around. Waylon Jennings would come around. They’d take him fishing, take him out, treat him like a person and not a museum exhibit. But the two relationships that mattered most in those years were with Jerry Lee Lewis and Merle Kilgore.

Jerry Lee Lewis was a cousin-of-a-cousin in the cosmic sense — another Louisiana boy, another ferocious talent, another man whose appetites would eventually outrun him. Jerry Lee was a decade and change older than Hank Jr., and he treated him like a kid brother who needed corrupting. Which is exactly what a teenage boy raised by a controlling stage mother needs, frankly. Jerry Lee taught him things Audrey did not approve of — about pianos, about pills, about women, about not giving a single solitary damn what anybody thought. The Killer was a terrible influence and exactly the right one. Hank Jr. has talked over the years about playing piano with Jerry Lee, drinking with Jerry Lee, surviving Jerry Lee. Their friendship was real and lifelong.

Yes, it’s Jerry Lee Lewis as the Devil. Why? Because — in lore, it’s not far off. Is that how I personally feel? No. But, man.. is it a good story to make people believe he may have been.

Merle Kilgore was the other one — and Merle is the unsung hero of this whole story. He was a songwriter (co-wrote “Ring of Fire” with June Carter, among other things), a Louisiana boy too, a larger-than-life character who became Hank Jr.’s manager, mentor, big brother, surrogate father, and best friend, and stayed in those roles for the rest of his life. When Audrey was suffocating Hank Jr. with the past, Merle was patiently telling him there was a future. When the suits at MGM wanted more of the same, Merle was quietly encouraging him to go off and find his own sound. When Hank Jr. needed someone to just be his guy — to take the calls, run the road, watch his back, tell him when he was being an idiot — that was Merle. The bond there was the real thing, and it lasted until Merle’s death in 2005.

If Audrey was the chain, Merle and Jerry Lee and Cash and Waylon were the older brothers and uncles who slowly, year by year, helped him saw through it.

Music Shenanigans

The music itself was a strange ride in those years. Officially, he was MGM’s Hank Williams Jr., the dutiful son carrying on the legacy. He cut record after record of his father’s material and his father’s style. The label loved it. Audrey loved it. Audiences loved it — especially the ones who had loved Hank Sr. and wanted to feel that ache one more time.

But Hank Jr. did not, in fact, love it. By his late teens, he was sneaking off into other rooms — literal and figurative. He played piano like Jerry Lee. He listened to Southern rock as it was being invented. He was hanging around with the Allman Brothers crowd, with the Marshall Tucker Band crowd, with Charlie Daniels. He played a mean blues. He could pick up just about any instrument in the room and make it work out for him — guitar, piano, fiddle, dobro, harmonica, drums. People used to think I was like that. Ha. No, Nashville humbles you greatly. But Hank Jr. He WAS/IS like that.

There were the usual shenanigans of a young, rich, famous, undersupervised musician in Nashville in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Drinking. Pills. Wrecked cars. Wrecked relationships. He married Gwen Yeargain in 1971, and they had a son in 1972 — Shelton Hank Williams, who you and I know as Hank Williams III — the ultimate crazed-country rebel — who looks so much like his grandfather it can give you the cold sweats. That marriage didn’t make it; they divorced in 1977.

He had hits in this period — real ones, not just covers. “Standing in the Shadows,” from 1966, is one of the most affecting things he ever recorded, a song he wrote himself about exactly what he was living through: trying to be a man while everyone around him saw only his father’s outline. “All for the Love of Sunshine” went to number one in 1970. He was a working country star with a working country career. He just wasn’t, on the inside, anywhere close to okay.

What He Thought About His Father

This is the part that’s hardest to pin down, because Hank Jr.’s feelings about his father in those years were tangled up with his feelings about his mother, and his feelings about the audience, and his feelings about the music business that was using him, and his feelings about himself.

He revered Hank Sr. He had to. He’d been raised in a temple where the saint never had to come down off the wall and be a person. But he also resented the hell out of him — for dying, for leaving, for casting a shadow so long that there was nowhere a boy could stand and see the sun.

The songs from this era hint at it. “Standing in the Shadows” is the obvious one. Listen to that song now, knowing what you know, and it will rip your heart out. He’s not raging at his father — he’s pleading with him. He’s saying, I’m trying. I’m trying to be your son. I’m trying to be my own man. I don’t know how to do both.

The relationship with his father at this point in his life wasn’t a relationship at all. It was an absence shaped like a man, and everywhere he looked, somebody had filled in the outline with their own expectations.

The Breaking Point

In 1974, after years of being managed, marketed, prescribed, drunk, divorced, depressed, and squeezed from every direction, Hank Jr. tried to kill himself. Pills. He was 25 years old.

He survived. And in the long, ugly aftermath of that, something shifted. He pulled away from Audrey — who would die in 1975, the same year as the fall, broke and bitter and largely estranged. He leaned harder on Merle. He started making the album that would, finally, sound like him.

“Stoned at the Jukebox” is by far my favorite tune off of this record. Dig it.

That record was Hank Williams Jr. and Friends, released in 1975. He brought in Charlie Daniels, Toy Caldwell from Marshall Tucker, Chuck Leavell — the Southern rock crew. He played piano and guitar. He sang in his own voice, not his father’s. The album wasn’t a smash on release, but it was a declaration of independence, and everybody in the business who heard it understood that something had changed. The puppet had cut its own strings.

He was about to find out how much further down he could fall before the climb would start.

August 8, 1975

He was hiking in the Bitterroot Mountains in Montana — Ajax Peak — with a friend. Snow on the ground in places, loose scree in others. He stepped on the wrong patch and went over the edge.

He fell more than 500 feet.

His face hit a rock. His skull was split open. His forehead was crushed. He was conscious enough at the bottom to know he was dying. By all rights and physics, he should have. The fact that he didn’t is one of those stories that makes you think twice about whatever you happen to believe about why people are kept here.

The reconstruction took years. Multiple surgeries. They rebuilt his face essentially from scratch. The beard and the sunglasses and the hat that became his trademarks weren’t a costume choice — they were a way of living with what was left. The man who finally walked back out into the world looked nothing like the boy who’d fallen, and looked nothing like his father, and that, in the end, may have been the most important gift the mountain ever gave him.

When he came back, he was Bocephus. Not the ventriloquist’s dummy. The real one. The one who would, over the next decade, remake country music in his own image and finally — finally — get to be a man with a name of his own.

But that’s the next chapter, and that’s the chapter most people already know.

This one — the one before the fall — is the one I keep coming back to. Because everything Hank Jr. became, every Monday Night holler and rowdy-friend anthem, every defiant chord and middle finger to Music Row, every honest note he ever sang — all of it was paid for by the boy who spent the first 26 years of his life wearing somebody else’s face.

A Personal Note

I want to say a few things from my own corner of the room, because I think this story matters more the longer you sit with it.

I’ll be honest — I didn’t always like Hank Williams Jr. For a long time I couldn’t hear past the rowdy-friends caricature, the football-night version, the guy who’d become a kind of cartoon to people who’d never bothered to dig in. But age does something to your ears. Time does something to your ears. And somewhere along the way I went back and listened to the catalogue — really listened — and I had to admit I’d been wrong. It’s brilliant. It’s all brilliant. The early stuff, the middle stuff, the rough stuff, the swagger, the heartbreak, the gospel, the blues. The man made a body of work, and most of us slept on it.

Here’s what I believe now, and I’ll plant a flag on it: Hank Williams Jr. spoke the words his father couldn’t record. Hank Sr. died at 29. He didn’t get the years to say what a man finally figures out he wanted to say. Hank Jr. got those years — got the decades his daddy never had — and used them. The obvious differences between the two of them are the easy thing to point at, but they’re more alike than most people can admit. Same hurt. Same honesty. Same refusal to make the song any prettier than the truth was. In a real and unsentimental way, I think Hank Jr. did pick up where Hank Sr. left off. Not by imitating him — that part was Audrey’s project, and it nearly killed him — but by finally being honest the way his father had been honest, in his own voice, on his own terms.

And I think Bocephus is the byproduct of two men more than anyone else: his daddy and Jerry Lee Lewis. That’s a hell of a dynamic to be carrying around inside one body. The lonesome hillbilly poet on one shoulder and the wild-eyed Louisiana piano-pounding outlaw on the other. You hear both of them in everything he ever cut. The ache and the grin. The hymn and the holler. That’s not a contradiction — that’s the man.

The last thing I want to say is this: I’m grateful he made it into the Country Music Hall of Fame while he was still here to see it. Recognition that comes after a man is gone is a kindness to history, but recognition that comes while he can stand up and feel it — while he can know his work was understood — that’s a kindness to the man himself. Bocephus earned that. The boy who spent his childhood being somebody else, who fell off a mountain and rebuilt his own face, who fought for the right to sing in his own voice — he deserved to live long enough to be told he’d done it. And he was.

That, to me, is the real ending of the story that started in a Shreveport hospital in 1949.

I’ve been playing Jimmie Rodgers. No, not just his music.. I mean, I’ve been acting as him. Well, and Johnny Cash.. and Conway Twitty, etc., etc.

I’ve been playing him onstage, in Nashville, in a show called CountryRoadsUSA — and I’ll tell you, the deeper I’ve gone into this man’s life, the more I’ve wanted to just grab people by the arm and say sit down, let me tell you what actually happened here. Not because it’s obscure trivia. Because it’s one of the greatest stories in American music, and it deserves to be told out loud, not just footnoted on a Hall of Fame plaque that people barely breeze by.

The “Father of Country Music.” That’s what they call him. And that’s true — but the title doesn’t carry the weight of the story. The story carries the weight. And the story ends in a New York hotel room in May of 1933, with a canvas cot, a failing lung, and twelve songs that needed to exist before the man recording them ran out of time to record them.

That’s the story I want to tell you today.

Country Music and Trains. It Was Always That Way.

Here’s something I keep coming back to. Ha. Here’s something that country music consistently comes back to:

Songs about trains.

Country music and trains have gone together since the very beginning of the genre — since before there was even a name for it. So many country songs are about trains. So many of the great artists either worked the railroads, grew up in railroad towns, or reached for the train as the central image for everything they were feeling — movement, freedom, loss, leaving home and never quite finding your way back.

That didn’t come from nowhere. It came from real life. From the actual intersection of working-class American existence and the iron lines that ran through the middle of it.

And the whole lineage of it — everything we love about country music — starts with a brakeman from Meridian, Mississippi named Jimmie Rodgers.

He was a railroad man before he was a music man. He worked the lines as a brakeman in the early 1920s, out in all weather, doing hard physical labor alongside Black railroad workers whose blues sensibility he absorbed deeply and genuinely. That sound — raw, sliding, emotionally honest, not fitting neatly into any existing category — became the foundation of what he eventually put on record. Country music, the way we hear it and feel it and perform it today, is built on what Jimmie Rodgers learned working those tracks.

And then the railroads gave him the thing that would kill him.

The Diagnosis

He was twenty-six years old when the doctors told him he had tuberculosis.

Twenty-six. Out on those lines in the cold and the dust, and somewhere along the way tuberculosis got into his lungs and decided to stay.

In 1924, there was no cure for TB. You rested. You got fresh air. You hoped. Which is just about the worst possible prescription for a man like Jimmie Rodgers — restless, performing, driven, with a wife named Carrie and a daughter to take care of and music pouring out of him whether he wanted it to or not.

So he kept going.

In 1927, he ends up in Bristol, Tennessee for the now-legendary Bristol Sessions, where Ralph Peer of Victor Records was holding auditions. The Carter Family recorded there too. Peer wasn’t entirely sure what to make of Rodgers — his sound was blues and folk and Tin Pan Alley and something that didn’t have a name yet — but he signed him anyway.

What came next was something remarkable. Between 1927 and 1933, Jimmie Rodgers recorded over a hundred songs. He became the best-selling recording artist in the American South — during the Depression. People who couldn’t afford groceries were buying his records. He built a mansion in Texas he called “Blue Yodeler’s Paradise.” He was photographed with Will Rogers. His blue yodel — that wild, soaring, impossible vocal thing — became a national obsession.

All of it, every show and every record, while tuberculosis was slowly taking him apart from the inside.

By the spring of 1933, Jimmie Rodgers weighed about ninety-five pounds.

When I play him on stage I think about that number. Ninety-five pounds. The disease had hollowed him out. He was coughing up blood. He couldn’t walk a block without stopping to breathe. His doctors told him plainly that he was dying — not eventually, not someday, but soon — and that he absolutely should not travel.

He’d already had to sell Blue Yodeler’s Paradise to cover debts. The Depression had hit Victor Records hard, the royalties had shrunk, and most of what he’d built financially was gone. His body was failing. The money was gone.

But he had twelve songs that weren’t recorded yet.

So he got on a train — of course he got on a train — and rode from Texas to New York City.

He checked into the Taft Hotel on Seventh Avenue with Carrie, a portable canvas cot, and a recording schedule starting May 17th.

Ralph Peer, who’d been with Rodgers since Bristol, understood exactly what he was looking at. He set the studio up with the cot in mind. Between takes — sometimes between verses — Jimmie would be helped from the microphone to the cot, where he’d lie down and breathe and wait for his body to let him keep going. Some sessions had to stop because he was coughing blood.

The people who were in that studio — the engineers, the session musicians — have described a quiet that would settle over the room during those pauses. These were working professionals, practical people, and they’d find themselves just going still. Watching this man on a cot in midtown Manhattan, waiting for his lungs to settle so he could get back up to the microphone and yodel.

What gets me most — what has always gotten me — is that Rodgers wasn’t making a scene about any of it. He joked with the musicians. He asked for retakes when the sound wasn’t what he wanted. He was focused. He was working. The dying was just something else happening at the same time.

The Twelve Songs

Eight days. May 17th to May 24th. Twelve songs.

Sounds like a long time to spend in the studio nowadays when Nashville sessions are famous for pumping out song after song like a Detroit assembly line. But think of trying to get a close to perfect vocal take from a man coughing up blood from tuberculosis.

“Mississippi Delta Blues” — deep in the tradition of those railroad workers who first shaped his sound. “Dreaming with Tears in My Eyes” — go find that one and listen to it knowing what you now know, and see what it does to you. “Somewhere Below the Dixon Line,” a man singing about longing for home. “Jimmie Rodgers’ Last Blue Yodel” — he named it that himself.

The recordings sound different from his earlier work. Not worse — different. Everything that made him great is still there: the phrasing, the timing, that loose and conversational way he had with a melody. But the voice is thinner. The breath is shorter. The yodels don’t climb as high or hold as long.

You can hear the disease in the music. And I’d argue that’s what makes these recordings something truly rare — the body and the song are the same thing, both at their absolute limit, and somehow that makes the whole thing more true than anything produced in perfect health ever could be.

Imagine if the last photo of you alive was one like this one. Here is the 95-pound Father of Country Music resting on the beach of Coney Island, NY on May 25th, 1933.

How it went down?:

May 24th. Last session. Done.

May 26th. Carrie finds him in the hotel room. Pulmonary hemorrhage. Thirty-five years old.

They put him on a train back to Meridian — those same lines he’d worked as a young man carrying him home. Thousands of people lined the tracks to watch the train pass. More than three thousand people came to the funeral home to pay their respects. In Mississippi. In 1933. Three thousand people, for a musician.

The twelve songs from those final sessions were released in the months that followed. People bought them. Radio played them. And quietly, they went into the bloodstream of everything that came after.

Why I Keep Telling This Story

Every time I walk out on stage as Jimmie Rodgers, I carry this with me.

Not as a sad ending. As a testament. Hank Williams was obsessed with Rodgers as a kid — obsessed. Merle Haggard recorded an entire album just to honor him. Bob Dylan has cited him. Every country artist who ever put real ache into a lyric, who ever connected a song to working-class life, who ever used a train as a way of talking about all the distances that open up between people — they’re downstream from this man.

Country music and trains. It has always been that way. And the man who set all of it in motion rode the rails his entire life, right up to the very last trip.

The road is a particular kind of hell that most people never have to understand from the inside.

Not the romantic road — not the open highway of the songs, the freedom, the wind through the windows and the next town glowing on the horizon. The real road. Three hundred nights a year in a different bed. The same set list for the four hundredth time to a crowd that wants to hear the song you wrote ten years ago and doesn’t care what you’ve learned since. The promoter who booked you into two cities five hundred miles apart on consecutive nights. The driver who needs to stay awake. The headliner who needs to perform at full power for ninety minutes after sixteen hours on a bus, then do it again tomorrow, then do it again the day after that.

The music industry of the 1950s and 1960s built its entire commercial architecture on the assumption that its artists could sustain this indefinitely. It did not provide the tools to do so. The artists found their own tools. They were small, they were cheap, they were widely available, and they worked — right up until they didn’t.

This is the story of what those tools cost.

The Pills Had Names

Like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, country musicians in the 1950s came out of their military service knowing that one or two little pills could help them through a long night of maneuvers. It was the same on the country music circuit, where agents booked shows night after night across long distances with little thought to the bus driver’s stamina or the headliner’s ability to stay sharp for audiences.

The pills got their own nicknames: little yellers, bennies, speckled birds, and the fabled L.A. Turnarounds — a big dose of the amphetamine Obetrol that allegedly could keep someone awake on a drive from Nashville to Los Angeles and back.

These were not illicit drugs in the modern sense. They were prescription medications — diet pills, pep pills, the same amphetamines the military had been handing to soldiers since World War II. Cheap, legal with the right piece of paper, and available from almost any doctor willing to write the script.

In Nashville, there was one doctor everybody went to.

My guess is that Elvis Presley is in the lead for artist most associated with pill addiction award.

Dr. Snapp’s Waiting Room

His name was Dr. Landon B. Snapp II, and his office was at 627 Woodland Street on Nashville’s east side, about a half mile from Woodland Sound Studios. In the mythology of Nashville’s pill years he was known simply as Dr. Snap — but most writers, caught up in the perfection of the name, never bothered to find out it was actually Dr. Snapp, spelled with two p’s. The distinction matters because Snapp was a real man, with a real address, a real waiting room, and a real patient list that reads like a who’s who of the Grand Ole Opry.

Singer Don Bowman described the scene with the clarity of someone who was there: “Everybody seen Dr. Snap. It looked like a goddamn Grand Ole Opry meeting every Monday morning in his office. Faron Young, Webb Pierce — every country music singer in Nashville was sitting out in his lobby waiting to see Dr. Snap. You’d go in and he’d say, ‘Yeah, you’re fine. Blood pressure? Yeah, okay. Pulse? Yeah, you got a pulse okay here.’ And he’d write you a prescription.”

That was the entire appointment. You had a pulse. Here were your pills.

Nashville DJ Captain Midnight, reflecting on the era, captured the specific commercial logic of the arrangement with startling clarity: “You didn’t get arrested for driving under the influence of speed. You didn’t get busted for dealing. There wasn’t any kind of crime about it. It was a very creative time in the city’s history.”

A very creative time. That phrase deserves to sit with you for a moment.

Ralph Emery — himself no stranger to the pill culture of the era — wrote about Dr. Snapp in his 1992 autobiography, recalling “songwriters would get a prescription from him, then sit up for days writing tunes.” There was a favorite gag among the musicians: someone would press a yellow thumbtack into the floorboards next to the Opry microphone, then watch in amusement as musicians walking by stopped to try to pick it up, mistaking it for one of the little yellow amphetamine tablets they were all carrying. The joke required no explanation to be funny. Everyone in the room already understood exactly what it meant.

Even Brenda Lee was briefly pulled into Dr. Snapp’s orbit. She was fifteen years old. Her manager didn’t object when she got diet pills prescribed. She took them, lost weight, and lost her memory along with it — standing onstage unable to remember the lyrics to her own songs. “I said, ‘I’d rather be fat than feel this way,’” she recalled decades later. “I’m not sure what the pills were. I was just a kid.”

She was fifteen. She was a kid. And she was sitting in the same waiting room as Faron Young and Webb Pierce and every other country music singer in Nashville, waiting to see the doctor who had a pulse check and a prescription pad and no further questions.

Singer Doug Kershaw, when called to testify at Dr. Snapp’s eventual trial, admitted he had used different names to obtain as many as five prescriptions from Snapp at a time — so he could have at least 500 pills on hand when he went out on tour. Not fifty. Five hundred. For the road.

After a four-year investigation by Tennessee’s State Health Department, Dr. Landon B. Snapp II was arrested in November 1976 and charged with multiple counts of overprescribing and illegally distributing Didrex. His defense attorneys argued he was a kindly man who might have been easily taken advantage of. He lost his medical license and was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison.

Hank Williams and the Other Fake Doctor

Dr. Snapp was at least a real physician — whatever the quality of his judgment. Hank Williams was not so fortunate.

Williams was born with a mild undiagnosed case of spina bifida occulta, a disorder of the spinal column which gave him lifelong pain — a significant factor in his later substance abuse. He was drinking by thirteen. By the time he became famous the pain and the alcohol were already inseparable, and a hunting accident in 1951 followed by spinal fusion surgery at Vanderbilt University Hospital deepened a dependence on painkillers that was already well established.

Into this situation walked a man named Horace Raphol “Toby” Marshall.

Marshall claimed to be a doctor. He had been previously convicted for forgery and paroled from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in 1951. He purchased his DSC title for $35 from the “Chicago School of Applied Science.” Under the name Dr. C.W. Lemon, he prescribed Williams with amphetamines, Seconal, chloral hydrate, and morphine.

Marshall charged $300 a week for his services. He was a convicted forger on parole who had bought a fake degree for thirty-five dollars and was prescribing the greatest songwriter in country music history a cocktail of substances that would kill him.

Williams was scheduled to perform in Charleston, West Virginia on New Year’s Eve 1952. Because of an ice storm he could not fly, so he hired a college student named Charles Carr to drive him. They stopped in Knoxville where Carr requested a doctor for Williams, who was ill from the combination of chloral hydrate and alcohol he had consumed. Dr. P.H. Cardwell injected Williams with two shots of vitamin B12 that also contained a quarter-grain of morphine.

Hotel porters had to carry him to the car. He could not walk under his own power.

At around midnight on New Year’s Day, somewhere between Mount Hope and Oak Hill, West Virginia, Carr noticed Williams’ blanket had slipped. When he pulled it back up, he noticed that his hand was stiff and cold.

Hank Williams was twenty-nine years old.

The autopsy did not test for drugs. Had the coroner done so, it is likely that both morphine and chloral hydrate would have been present. Chloral hydrate is known to be a heart depressant. When mixed with both morphine and alcohol, it creates a combination that can be deadly.

Following his death, Williams’ family received a bill for $736.39 from Marshall for his services.

Marshall’s parole was eventually revoked. He served the remainder of his sentence in an Oklahoma prison. The bill went unpaid, presumably. Hank Williams was buried in Montgomery, Alabama, and has never been reinstated as a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Johnny Cash Lived in the Dark for Ten Years

In 1957, on a long road trip to Jacksonville, Florida, Cash began taking amphetamines to stay awake. Members of his touring party were using them and were happy to share these bennies with Cash and his band. A bottle of 100 or so pills would cost less than ten dollars, and on the road, they were as important to Cash as his guitar.

Cash described his initiation in language that remains one of the most honest accounts of amphetamine addiction ever delivered by a public figure. He told Larry King: “In the 1960s, it was amphetamines to stay up and barbiturates to wind down. For a while it was okay. At first I said, ‘This is what God meant for me to have in this world. This was invented for me.’ I honestly thought it was a blessing, a gift from God — these pills. But then I finally found out I was deceiving myself.”

Cash took his first pep pill in 1957 and was addicted by 1960. He believed the pills gave him the energy and confidence to be a better performer. As he took more, he needed barbiturates to come down from the amphetamines. Unable to sleep or eat, at six feet one inch tall, Cash dropped to 155 pounds.

In his own words: “Soon I was going around to different doctors to keep those pills coming in the kind of quantities I needed, and when they started upsetting my digestive system, I started drinking wine to settle my stomach. The wine also took the sharper, more uncomfortable edges off the amphetamines I’d begun adding to the mix — because I was still looking for that euphoria.”

In 1965, U.S. Customs officers arrested Cash in El Paso, Texas. They suspected heroin. They found instead 688 Dexedrine capsules and 475 Equanil tranquilizers hidden inside his guitar case. Because the pills were prescription drugs rather than illegal narcotics, Cash received a suspended sentence.

For a time Cash shared an apartment in Nashville with Waylon Jennings, who was also deeply addicted to amphetamines. Two of the most important artists in the history of country music, living together in a Nashville apartment, both on the same pharmaceutical program, both falling apart while the booking calendar kept filling up.

In 1967 Cash drove alone to Nickajack Cave near Chattanooga with a fatal dose of pills and the intention of not coming back out. Once deep inside the caves, he became religiously inspired and found his way back out, where June Carter and his mother were waiting with food. He swore off the pills.

The cave would have been underwater on the day Cash often cited. And he still used drugs afterward.

He relapsed in 1977. Again in 1983. Betty Ford Clinic. Cumberland Heights. Loma Linda. The relapses kept coming because the pills kept being available and the road kept demanding what the road had always demanded. He made At Folsom Prison during those years. He made At San Quentin. He made the American Recordings with Rick Rubin at the end of his life and created some of the most devastating music of the century. The addiction and the art ran in parallel for nearly fifty years, and it is not possible to fully separate them.

I always sort of knew the Nickajack Cave story wasn’t a thing — but damned if I didn’t want to believe Johnny Cash’s ever word..

Waylon, Cocaine, and the End of the Prescription Era

Dr. Snapp’s arrest in 1976 did not end the drug culture of Nashville’s music industry. It redirected it.

In his autobiography, Waylon Jennings described the transition with the blunt economy of a man who had lived it firsthand: “Prescriptions were harder to find, and there was some bad shit on the market. I wasn’t going to stop, no way, so Richie gave me some cocaine. ‘Look, Hoss, try this.’ I liked it. For the next ten years, I liked it.”

That is the entire story of how Nashville’s amphetamine era became Nashville’s cocaine era, told in four sentences by one of the men who lived through both.

During the early 1980s, Jennings’ cocaine addiction was so intense that he claimed to spend $1,500 a day to fuel his habit. Fifteen hundred dollars a day in 1980 dollars. The math on a year of that is staggering. The math on the years he somehow still performed through it is more staggering still.

Jennings got clean in 1984. He wrote about the cocaine years in his autobiography with a directness that most of his contemporaries never managed — not as cautionary tale, not as redemption narrative, but as the plain account of what it actually looked like from inside. The paranoia. The delusion. The years of burning through something irreplaceable in the engine of a career that the industry needed to keep running.

Marty Stuart, who knew these men and traveled those same roads, said: “I look at Waylon and I’m glad he quit because it probably extended his life several years. But quite frankly that music never had the spark again that it had before he went to Phoenix and got his life together. It was more mature, maybe more meticulous, but there was a romping stomping something about it that was fueled by it.”

That observation — delivered with obvious ambivalence — is the most honest public statement anyone in Nashville has made about the relationship between addiction and the music it produced. The implication underneath it is the one nobody wants to say directly: some of the greatest country music ever recorded was made at the outer edge of what human chemistry could sustain.

Waylon could be a cigarette ad without even trying. Look at this. If it were the 70s, and I were the marketing director at Marlboro — this would be in every bus stop in America.

The Industry’s Role

I want to be direct about something the biographical accounts of these artists consistently soften or sidestep.

The drug culture that consumed Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and dozens of others was not a series of individual failings that happened in isolation from the commercial structure around them. It was the industry’s solution to an impossible logistics problem, adopted by artists because the alternative — rest when the schedule demanded performance — was not considered commercially viable.

Dr. Snapp’s waiting room on Woodland Street was not a rogue element. It was infrastructure. The fake doctor prescribing Hank Williams chloral hydrate and morphine was an extreme version of a system that was operating, in more legitimate form, all over the industry. The booking agents who scheduled two cities five hundred miles apart on consecutive nights were not unaware of what their artists were taking to survive the schedule. They were simply not required to care.

Marty Stuart put it plainly: “You look back on the broken families and the people that are in their graves today that should be here playing music with us and the hurt that it imposed on kids who didn’t know what was wrong with daddy or mama. That’s a deep and hurtful subject.”

What It Cost

Hank Williams dead at twenty-nine. Keith Whitley dead at thirty-three from alcohol poisoning in 1989. The list of careers shortened, voices damaged, families destroyed, and children who grew up not knowing what was wrong is long enough to fill a much longer article.

The ones who survived did so largely through luck, the intervention of people who refused to leave, and a kind of constitutional stubbornness that the road tested to its absolute limit. Johnny Cash broke his own nose three times during his addiction years. He crashed every car he owned. He walked out of Nickajack Cave and spent the next thirty-five years relapsing and recovering in a cycle that the public version of his story compresses into a single triumphant turning point because the truth is less comfortable.

Waylon Jennings got clean and spent his remaining years as an elder statesman of a movement he had helped build. He died at sixty-four, his foot amputated from complications of diabetes. The music he made during the worst of the cocaine years remains some of the most vital and ungovernable country music ever recorded.

Neither of them had to survive it. The industry that needed them onstage had no plan for what happened if they didn’t.

The pills had names. The doctor had an address on Woodland Street. The waiting room was full every Monday morning. The shows went on.

And the music was extraordinary.

That is the most uncomfortable truth of all.
