Wreck of the Old 97, decades later, mutated into M.T.A, a satirical Boston mayoral campaign song penned by Bess Lomax Hawes (sister of song collector Alan Lomax) about a character named Charlie who’s doomed to ride the subway forever because he can’t afford the “exit fare.” Of course, the Kingston Trio put this absurd tale on the pop charts in 1959, and performed it ad nauseam for years
